Hi all,

We recently got a Boston Terrier for about a week. He's three months old. He's a really really energized puppy, likes to run all over the place and just crashes asleep immediately after he's tired.

But there's one problem

Everytime we leave him alone and go out. We keep him in fences inside the house. Inside the fence we have some water and sometimes food, a sleeping pad, and a pad with those smell for dogs to pee/poop on.

But whenever we arrive home, we always see a huge mess because he's been stepping on his own poop and all around the fences all over the place. Although this never happens when we are home and we only got him for one week. This happens EVERYTIME.

Is there something we can do right now? Or we could only wait for him to learn the proper manner? Thanks for any help! =)

You should buy a doggy door, that way he can go outside to play and have fun, he can also learn to go potty out there, too.

You will need to have a week or two to stay home and house break your puppy, if you want a clean house.

You need to take the dog outside or put him on a puppy pad ever two hours and say "Potty" or "Poop" or whatever other word (single) to get him to go. Then praise him or give him a treat when he does the right thing.

However you train him, I would NOT suggest crate training as a method of house breaking your puppy. It is a small, confined area that a little, hyper puppy has to stay in for HOURS. Thus, he will have to go potty in there andhe WONT like that at all. Dogs do not like to do their business in their sleeping quarters but they also can't hold in their poop for long, either.

First, give the puppy dewormer. If he can spread his poo all around like that it sounds like it isn't very solid to start with.

Second, purchase a small crate for him to have for a bedroom. Your puppy should be in it whenever you leave the house. It will make him feel safe and secure and they really need that crate to have their own space. It is good for you and very good for him.

He is freaking out when you are gone because he does not have a safe place to be, a crate. They need the small enclosed area for them to relax. The puppy will be fine without food and water while you are out.

Crates are also excellent for helping with potty training.
Note regarding a comment above.. NEVER strike a puppy. You need to teach the puppy good manners by positive reinforcement and giving a "No' sternly when the pup is naughty. There should never be any acceptable reason to hit a dog, much less a puppy. That is no way to train it.

are you leaving him alone all day while you are at work or just while you go out during the day or night? Timing is important,
feed him and then walk him real good about 20 minutes after he eats, walk him until he pees and poops, then you can leave him home and maybe there won't be a mess. Always walk him after he eats and stay outside until he goes.

He really is too young to be left alone very often and for long periods of time. Puppies need to watched and trained and you need to be home for that really. At this young age, they are very hyper and playful and not really minding their environment, hence the stepping in the poop. Until he is older and fully house trained for 4-6 weeks, he shouldn't be left home often or for long periods of time.

hitting a puppy is not the answer,it has no idea why you are hitting him, leave plenty of old newspaper on the floor, and sprinkle some cat litter granules on his accidents, its absorbing and easier to clean up,this is one of the things raising a puppy entails and he will grow out of it soon, soon you will have a best friend for life.

Get a portable kennel and keep the pup inside it when you go out. This will at least help keeping your place clean. It might train the pup also.

use a crate. they don't like to "mess" in their space. They will even go into the crate when they are tired, it is their safe haven.

Try not to leave him alone. When you catch him in the act, hit him. He will learn that he MUST NOT step in the poop or he will be hurt.
