I have Comcast cable and I am trying to watch Sportscenter on ESPN HD. The cable guide says that it is in 5.1 surround sound, but no sound is coming out of my surround L/R speakers. Should sound be coming out of these speakers in 5.1?

Yes it should if you have the audio cables hooked up right. If your using the fiber optic connection from the cable box, make sure surround decoding is enabled on your AV system.
Because I don't know the type of cable box comcast uses, or what type of surround system you have, I can be much more help. Sorry.

Only if you can receive an HD signal. Just because it is broadcast does not mean you can receive the signal.
You have to have HDTV and an HD tuner to receive the proper 5.1 signal.
