The recognized 'holy places' of the planet are in demand, in my view, because they are an exploitable commodity for a religion to offer to its' flock.
If a single place is deemed valuable by more than a single religion, it's value to both the controlling group and to the groups which are excluded is naturally increased. Just as with a one-of-kind golden object or a unique gem, the value placed upon things is increased by it's rarity.
Why fight over it...? I believe the answer to that is obvious, isn't it? Possession of relic or place of 'holy value' is an attraction and a rallying flag for the controlling party to wave about and that gives the owner of such a place the desirable ability to assign importance to itself... an importance which extends beyond that of the the non-owner. Just as one having money in the bank is deemed by all others to be an important person, the religion that gains control of a 'holy place' is deemed to have the power of the place itself.
Ironic, that officially religions would display such forms of jealousy, and greed, and pride; and, that's about all it amounts to, isn't it?... obvious displays of religious hypocrisy.
For the individual, you might consider that the small minded can be easily impressed to feel special by simply visiting a 'special' place. Between the child who has visited Disneyland and the child who has not, only the one who has visited is 'special.'

You ask for the truth, but I doubt that you can handle the truth. God wasn't always portable. Sacredness used to always be recognized as very place-specific; very localized. It was when humans decided to go conquering their neighbors that they had to put God into a handsome carrying case. But there are still places on earth- in fact most of the places where humans live- that are considered to be charged with a sacred kind of energy. I know that I make the rules in MY house. Well, my wife MAKES the rules, but I sure as heck inforce them.
Okay, I just do the dishes and take the trash out.

That's a great question. I don't understand that either. If god is everyone and everything, how can someone be ungodly? It just doesn't make sense. Too much belief, not enough thought.

Art is also within us, but you need to display and share it. Gathering in a particular space to do so, not only gives you a chance to recognise that which is within, but encourages its expression.
