I am wanting to buy a camcorder before christmas and I need to know which one is the best to buy? What is the difference between 8mm, DVD, and MiniDV? What name brand is the best?
Where is the best place to buy one?
I know this is a lot of questions but I need to know what is the best before I buy.

Here's a website and has a good explanation of the various recording media:

I have a Sony with 16:9 recording (anamorphic) and 5.1 surround with a 3 MP camera as a feature. The video is outstanding, the best amateur footage I have ever seen! I could not be more impressed. I came from a Sharp Hi 8MM, and the difference is night and day. Note: mine is a 3" DVD format recorder, not mini DV, but it is the same priciple with an easier and more durable output.

8mm is older much larger tape and is not compatible with 3ccd (finer SD picture) MiniDV (Digital Video) is a smaller tape and newer to the market, DVD (Digital Video Disk) is just generally what you would burn something to or purchase at home and enjoy.

Now If I were you I would hold off on buying a HD cam the tech is purly just not there, just check out some miniDV cams and what preferences fit your needs. : )

8MM Film- Film that movies were orignally printed on, very basic, B&W, poor quality

DVD- Step-up from VHS tapes, CDs that hold movies or other such info. such as movies at a higher quaility.

MiniDV- a type of tape used in most modern personal camcorders, built in HDDs are whats becoming new technology for personal cameras.

8 mm is out or soon will be, the new standard is mini dv witch is 100% digital as well as the DVD camcorder. the thing is that the dv tape holds alot more recording time per cassette versus a DVD. i would personally recommend mini dv, smaller and in some cases less expensive.

Hi,
I shop a lot and to save time and money I use cheapest prices search engine. Almost every merchant is there and over a million consumer written reviews. You will find many other ways that will help you with questions.
You can shop online or you can go to a merchant and use the toll free phone number if you feel more comfortable shopping like that.
There are merchant reviews, product reviews, compare by brand and a lot more. I hope I helped you and I wish you good luck.
