Do I also have to be a paramedic? If I was only a fireman, what would my duty be with car accidents? Would I have to take the bodies out or do the paramedics do that?

You can become a Firefighter without going through Paramedic school. Normally, at an accident, the Fire Dept shows up in case extraction is needed using Hurst tools or to make sure there is no danger of a fire due to gasoline leakage. At least that's how it is here in Florida. Wish ya luck. Honored profession. :)

You do not have to be a paramedic/EMT in most cases to be a firefighter. Some places require you to have that training to be hired there. On a car accident you would be there to help extract someone from the vehicle if trapped, stand by in case the vehicle catches fire, and usually they are the ones that clean any spilled fluids from the vehicles and sweep debris out of the road. If bodies give you the creeps then try another profession. Good luck.

Sounds like you'd better give second thoughts to becoming a firefighter - if you don't want to have anything to do with "the bodies," you're going to have problems! I believe you do have to take paramedic (EMT) training to become one - sorry about that!

First you must be dedicated 100%, Then study and take proper courses in college. I saw them one time explaining what type of fire, and what type or Class of extingusher to use. Class A, B, or C on certain types of different materials or liquids. And I belive you need several hours of class time too. Good Luck!

most major cities cross train their firefighters/EMT's.They also run along with the ambulances on car accidents.
Our city just started to cross train our firefighters although we don't respond with the EMS unless they need our rescue squad for the Jaws of Life tools
