If you are eating a salad or something and it has vinegar (red wine, or balsamic) what is a good wine to have with either of those types of vinegars?

Well seeing as vinegar is made from wine,I would suggest red wine would not go with red wine vinegar, try something on a different spectrum, such as a pino grigio(white wine)the sweetness should hold up to the vinegar, and it should marry well with the red wine in the vinegar, bringing out the richness of the red wine that is still present in the vinegar. With balsamic, especially a good thick and aged balsamic that is sweet and has depth of flavor it will go well with a peppery Shiraz. Do not use a port, this will throw off the natural sweetness of the Balsamic. You could however go with a good dry Brut sparkling. Anything that is extremely dry and drinkable on it's own should marry nicely.

With something like a balsamic I would recommend a full but slightly fruity Pinot Noir, with standard red wine vinegar I think a Chardonnay should compliment it well

Hey Now...

I like opposites so...
The vinegar is tart so I would drink a sweet type of wine...
A Blush or White Zinfandel or Port would be nice...
An berry flavored red also would be great with it...

One rule that usually works with food and wine pairings is to match like with like. To match the acidity of your salad dressing, try a wine with gripping acidity like a Riesling or perhaps Champagne.

Merlot - it is lovely with everything and so smooth it is a perfect balance and compliment to any salad sandwich or other simple meal.
