Everything Oprah does, she does in order to increase her ratings. Sure, she's a big philanthopist, giving away millions each year (actually, most of her give-aways are sponsored by another company, so they're not costing Oprah a dime), but you'll notice that she always makes a show about it.

So and so lost their house in a tornado and Oprah builds them a new house, then exploits the family on her show.

Oprah is all about one thing: ratings.

How sad that you are so cynical. I hardly ever get a chance to watch Oprah's show, but everything I have ever read about her or heard about her has made me feel that she is a truly kind-hearted person who sincerely wants to help others. The 'paying it forward' concept doesn't have to involve money- it can be as simple as asking someone if they need help reaching something on a high shelf in the grocery store, holding the door open for a mom pushing a stroller, an elderly person, or someone in a wheelchair, engaging a lonely looking person in conversation, or complimenting a person for good service, a pretty sweater, nice shoes, or whatever. It's all about actually interacting with another human being on a personal level. It does wonders for everyone involved, and will most likely motivate whomever you have interacted with to go out and do the same for another person- and so on, and so on. A concept brilliant in it's simplicity and so very easy to accomplish. Can you imagine how much better our would would be if everyone did one simple but kind act, even once a day, every day? It would be wonderful.

In actuality, ALL Tv personalities are about ratings, not just Oprah. That's the only way to stay on the set is by ratings. Without them the show(s) we currently watch would not last very long. That's good business sense!!

Oh please, you think Oprah needs this little stunt to get people to watch her show? Do you even know what she is capable of with or without this "publicity stunt"? A couple of years ago, she made a negative comment about beef, and you know what happend? There was a significant decrease in the consumption of beef. So significant that Oprah had to explain herself and reclaim the statement. So don't even talk about her needing to raise her ratings. She is not a personal favorite of mine, but at least she is using her celeb status to generate some good.

I don't think it was all about to get us to watch her show. I watched the show where she gave out the $1,000 to the audience and this looks like it is the followup show with the results.
I think the producers and such are just interested in hearing what others would do and produce an interest in the concept of giving and they timed it for the holiday season it looks like.

Take a dollar and go out tomorrow and 'pay it forward'. Put some change in a parking meter that's expired, buy a kid in the grocery store a ride on the pony, call a nursing home and get some names of people who never have visitors and send them a postcard...........Live the question and then see what the deal is.
If nothing else, the question sure got my brain in gear. And I really enjoyed reading the answers.

The answer to your question is:

Whatever you think of Oprah as a businesswoman, she is first a talk show host. They ask questions to inspire more questions, and spark dialogue between strangers.

Cynicism is great as a hobby, but don't make it a lifestyle choice.

she just want to pick your brain, and get ideas how people think when it comes to good deeds and community service, don't take it as a personal gain for her, she doesnt need this for her rating, you and i know that if her rating goes down she can retire and she still will be richer than any of us combined, so give her a break and besides if u dont want to answer her question then u dont have to..

Oprah is a very powerful woman. She does a lot of things to boost her ratings. How else do you think she is so popular. But I reckon she does a lot of good work for womans liberation.
