If it's homemade, it is the best pie ever.....It's basically a mince pie with a creamy mashed potato topping.
You start by frying up some mince, onion, carrots, peas, salt & pepper. Mix in a little worchestshire sauce, beef stock & gravy powder, (not liquid as the juices from the meat will thicken the gravy) then pour into a baking dish. Top with mashed potato, (mix a little grated cheese into it and don't forget the butter) cook in the oven for 30-45mins and you will have the best shepards pie ever.
It will taste so good cos you made, not like the store bought ones that are full of who knows what...

It is a delicious pie! The base is made up of mince meat and a little gravy , topped with mashed potatoes and forked to give it the Shepherd pie look. I sometimes add grated carrot or green peas to the mince just to add some variation. It might vary slightly in different recipes but in the end it still has the meat base and potato topping.

When I make it, I mix browned ground beef with chopped onions, ½ clove of minced garlic, salt & pepper and a beef gravy (or mushroom soup) mixed with your choice of veggies (I use green beans, corn & diced green peppers) for the bottom layer.
I then cover the top with mashed potatoes and bake in the oven until the potatoes form a slight outer crust. I finally add grated cheese to the top and bake a few more min to melt the cheese.
Call this Chuck's version since he's never been wild about the taste of lamb. ;)

Shepard's Pie contains a layer of ground beef, mashed potatoes, and controversially carrots (some people use peas, or even corn).Traditionally I know it as carrots however. (cook all the ingredients first separately), layer into a pie pan with whatever pie crust you like, then bake until the pastry is baked. You can make individual pies, if you would like as well. Comfort food from the heritage of comfort food!

Prep time is for overall work and cook time is oven time.
When I find it I will also put the English recipe on here. That is a from scratch recipe.

shephards pie is mash potato and minced meat. if you have never tried it here's a recipe.
A shepherd's pie recipe with beef.
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups cooked chopped meat
1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
2 cups gravy
salt and pepper
2 cups mashed potato, prepared with milk and seasonings as desired
salt and pepper
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1 tablespoon butter
PREPARATION:
Combine meat, gravy, and chopped onion; season with salt and pepper to taste. Line the bottom of a buttered baking dish with a layer of half of the seasoned mashed potatoes. Add meat mixture then cover with remaining mashed potatoes. Or, meat and gravy can be put in the baking dish first then topped with all of the mashed potatoes. Dot mashed potato topping with butter, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and paprika, then bake for about 30 minutes at 400°, or until potato topping is browned and the Shepherd's pie is thoroughly heated.
This shepherd's pie recipe serves 4.

The base is minced beef cooked in a sauce like BBQ sauce. You can add carrots and onions brunoise to the beef. Then top with smooth mash potatoes and bake in the oven. You can add grated cheese before baking so there is a layer of soft molten cheese on top. Serve hot with rich gravy and green Petit Pois (Green Peas) and baby carrots. I lived in England for many years and it is a classic English dish. When it is done well, it is simply superb! Enjoy!

Here's a recipe for you...
"Shepherd's Pie" - 4 servings
2 tbsp. butter or margarine
2 cups cubed cooked lamb or beef
1 large onion; chopped
2 ribs celery; thinly sliced
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
1/2 cup beef broth
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 cups hot, seasoned mashed potatoes
1) In 10" skillet over medium heat, in hot butter, cook lamb, onion and celery until vegetables are tender, stirring often. Stir in flour; gradually add beef broth. Cook until mixture boils, stirring constantly. Stir in Worcestershire sauce. Turn meat mixture into 10x6" baking dish. Spread mashed potatoes over mixture.
2) Bake at 450* - 10 minutes or until potatoes are lightly browned.
(TIP: Prepare as above, but substitute 1 lb. ground lamb or beef for cubed meat; omit butter and increase beef broth to 1 cup. Cook meat with onion and celery as above; drain off fat. Proceed as above.)
