I have a Maverick Model 88 and I shoot slugs, buckshot and bird shot out of it. Should I use a "choke tube?"

A choke tube changes the restriction at the end of the barrel to change the shot pattern. You would use a looser (imp. cylinder) for close range shooting and a tight (full) for long range shots.
The site http://www.maverickarms.com/pages/choketubes.htm will show you the different choke tubes made for your gun.
If your gun has a fixed choke tube it should be stamped on the barrel. Most were Full or Mod(ified). If you want a barrel with interchangeable choke tubes you could pick up another barrel for your gun. They do make an accu-choke (brand name of the choke tube) barrel for your gun. Any Mossberg model 500 barrel, in your gauge, will also fit your Model 88. You should be able to find them fairly cheap.
eBay usually has 15-20 Mossberg barrels listed in 12 gauge. One just sold for $60.00 with one modified choke tube. Additional choke tubes are around $10-20 on eBay or $20 and up at a sporting goods store or gun shop.

A choke tube controls the area which the shot covers.

Extra full-very tight
Full-tight
Modified-in between
Improved cylinder-Loose

Kind of a rough description of chokes, but it's just so you get the idea.

You should always shoot a shotgun with a choke tube in if it has an interchangeable setup. If it's got a barrel choke, you'll have to buy different barrels to get different chokes.

When shooting slugs, rifled tubes,or cylinder chokes give the best accuracy.Slugs can be shot through any choke, with the exception of some of the super tight turkey chokes.Rifled chokes are used for sabot slugs.

A choke tightens the shot pattern. Won't do anything for slugs and buckshot.
