Okay the link is disabled. So I have no idea what she sent or what the deal was...

It's better to send items to troops through a non profit that knows who is in need and who isn't. This way you are sure to get things people want or need.

Many service people do NOT get things in the mail and are grateful for mail and items. But it is still better to go through an organization that handles these things in order to be sure your gifts will be used and appreciated. Solicitation or advertisement isn't appropriate.

If you have a friend or family member stationed in one of these areas ASK them what they need or what is allowed. Sometimes they just don't have the room for what people try to send. or they aren't able to tote it around country if on manuevers! Don't be offended. It is better to ask either their parents/wife/etc... if you want to make it a surprise.

If you or anyone reading this wants to pick a non profit that supports the military you can follow this link to a list of places that include phone card donation, commissary and bx gift certificates, christmas presents etc.. to the service people who will appreciate it.

My husband hates receiving excessive packages when he is deployed. His first tour in Iraq, his mother had everyone she knew send him stuff constantly and it got to be too much. They have limited storage/living space to keep this stuff in, and on top of that they really don't NEED anything. They have stores where they can buy anything they need, and the living conditions are quite good at this point. There are some soldiers who don't have anyone from home sending them stuff, and would appreciate the acts of kindness, but not all. Who knows - maybe this guy was bombarded with boxes from strangers, on top of the stuff his own family was sending. Or maybe he doesn't get any boxes, but doesn't want the pity of a stranger. I'm sorry that this woman was offended, but I'm sure the soldier had good reasons for refusing her gifts.

You really have to understand how absolutely bombarded by the public they are. My husband has been over there multiple times. He's been offered all kinds of gifts (religious and otherwise). he has declined them all. Politely of course. Some of these guys don't want or need anything. For some reason everyone here in the US thinks these guys are eating crap, and living in a cave with no electricity or stores. They eat very well, have many stores to shop at and many of them stay in Air Conditioned Tents! it's not really that much of a hardship (at least not at the 5 plaes in Iraq and 3 in Afghanistan where my husband was). If they want something, they'll ask for it. They are tired of the unwanted solicitation. magine a telemarketer calling you 24 hours a day while you are trying to do your job. that's wha it's like for them!

Can't access the page. Is it violent and ugly? You know the US goverment has been taking up some tough measures against soldiers sending military videos and pics over the internet.

It is a nice thought but there are to many wierdos out there and you have to worry about what you get. And carting it all the way back from the desert is a pain.
