maybe you should go to your local pet store and see what you should do...

ok first of all using the dry shampoo does not work, it makes the tail look like it hasn't been cleaned. i breed golden retrievers and all their tails look good, the hair is flowing and very clean, even though they play outside in the dirt. give them a bath using the aveeno and then use a mild conditionor on the hair and rinse. after that blow dry the dog and comb out at the same time, this will help keep the hair looking good and clean. bathe once a week and use the aveeno everytime you bathe and within afew weeks the tail will look good again. now you have to remember that goldens like to play in the dirt and do alot of digging so the tail will not look this way all the time unless you keep up on the baths because the more you keep him clean the better his tail will look. I bathe my dogs once a week and i always have the same problem with the tail looking that it is not clean but i bathe once a week and i use the aveeno and a mild conditionor and i don't have the problem anymore. i hope this works for you and i hope i made you feel better knowing that you are not the only one with this problem, but if you take care of it now it will not be a problem later down the line. good luck.

The Golden Retriever's tail should be groomed to look like a fan. The best way is to twist the end, put your thumb just below the end of the tail bone and trim the end near your thumb. Then, working from the end, carefully form a fan towards the base of the tail.

If he is a puppy his fur is probably a little short and cant stand out long. If this isnt the case then when you give him a bath dont let it air dry. It might cling to the tail when it is wet making it stay that way when it drys. So brush out the hair when it is wet and maybe blow dry it with a comb making sure the heat is on to make it permenently stay out striaght.

He has overactive fatglands on the tail...thats what it sounds like..use babyoil to dissolve the greasy parts, then a shampoo that you lather up real well, let sit for a while, and rinse out well.A few drops of Vinegar in the last rinse may clear it all up.Use the Vinegar rinse on his tail every time you bathe him.Mix like one cup Vinegar to a gallon of water.Another natural remedy may be to use an eggwhite, massage it into the greasy part of the tail, let sit, lather it up,rinse well.Feed extra vitamin B to promote healthy growth of his fur.Good Luck!

i dont know what these people are talking aboutif it has locks of hair sticking to it those are probably mats and need to be cut or shaved off. if they go down all the way to the skin then they willl need to be shaved golden ret. are prone to getting mats on their tail, behind their ears, on their belly, take it to a professional groomer and they will get them out safely.(tell them you need a groom not just abath)
also their tail needs to be brushed out several times a week
brush out small strands at a time instead of trying to brush alot at once, just do a little at a time.
always brush your dog after you bathe it, use a conditioner or detangler if necessary.
just be gentle, and if its tangled hold the hair firmly at the dogs skin so when you brush it doesnt pull
as he gets older his tail will get fuller and need more brushing!! :)

Ok, how do I put this? It's possible that he has S##T matted up in his tail. My dog's does the same thing. Cut all of the hair off, let it grow back, and this time, groom his tail more often.

stop brushing his tail. If he poops that might be getting in his tail fur. Believe me if hes 6 months old he got at least a solid year of growing he'll grow out of it.

maybe his tail got dumped in stick-forever mud or it is just the color of his tail...
