I never understood this joke.

I thought it could also be a double meaning in the context of an example.

Like maybe, "There are some people who just won't stop talking. Take my wife, please."

So that would be saying take the wife as an example and also take her away.

Henny Youngman made it popular as part of his stand up act. His wife was a main topic of a lot of his jokes. He is an older comic who's one-liner just stood the test of time really. One-liners were his claim to fame.

That's what Rodney Dangerfield used to say after and during telling wife jokes....like the following:
was tired one night and I went to the bar to have a few drinks. The bartender asked me, "What'll you have?" I said, "Surprise me." He showed me a naked picture of my wife.

During sex my wife always wants to talk to me. Just the other night she called me from a hotel.

My marriage is on the rocks again. Yeah, my wife just broke up with her boyfriend.

One day as I came home early from work, I saw a guy jogging naked. I said to the guy, "Hey buddy...why are you doing that for?" He said, "Because you came home early."

Then he would say "Take my wife, please!"

This is the punch line.

A man puts up an ad in the newspapers saying, " Wife wanted. Any help will be rewarded suitably."

The next day he gets loads of mails/faxes saying " take my wife please"

i feel fairly certain it is to have a double meeting, the way you would flatly say "for example" you say "take my wife..." as though you were about to make a statement about her or her activities, but instead you say please, completly changing the meaning in an unexpected way.

the joke only works if there is a pause between the words 'wife' and 'please'... and yes, it is in the context of an example...
