A cat in the wild is always in danger--from people, cars, other animals, diseases, etc. I agree that limiting or even eliminating unsupervised outdoor jaunts is a best bet for the ultimate safety of the animal. And be sure to keep up on the kitty's rabies and feline leukemia shots.
I use hematite for protection spells and it works well for me--perhaps you could use small flat stones on the kitty's collar. Be careful about the type of collar and the things that you attach to it. Cats like to squeeze into small spaces and if your charm catches on something (and the collar isn't loose enough for the cat to slip out of it if necessary) your pet may strangle itself trying to get loose or be stuck for days until someone finds it. I had a friend that lost a puppy this way. Just something to consider.
Best wishes for you and your kitty.

Take your cats fur (even shed fur), and tie it with some red thred. It can be cotten or anything else, but slik is best. Then say the blessing of your diety. Next, put it in a cantister. The canister must be reflective on the OUTSIDE, but NOT on the INSIDE. If it is reflective on the inside, the spell will be bad for your cat. Place the canister nere the entrence where you cat comes in. The blessing helps, but if not maditory.
You can get a hematite ring, and place it on your cats coller.

I am not sure your background in magick, but probably your best simple spell would be to make an offering to Bast. I have heard of those that have burned catnip on coals as an offering in asking Her to watch over their beloved pets.
On the practical side, you might also look for ways to keep him/her out of harms way by limiting its time outside.

Since cats aren't going to sit still for long you will have to attach it to him/her.
How about a small protective sigil on its collar? Consecrate a bell to warn away danger perhaps?

i would cahrge a protective charm and ask Bast to confir her protections on the animal.
you could also ask any fey to protect the animal. leave an offering of warm milk and a small ammount of silver for them and ask them to protect your home and animals.
Ignore the doomsayers. they are just scared because they do not understand.
best of wishes and blessings.

Don't put him out if you don't have to...otherwise try asking Bastet to bless and protect him and consider charging a tiger's eye pendant and attaching it to his collar.
