Excellent question.

If Jesus saves what does God do?

Jesus is the savior of the world, and God the Father is the one who has given us that Savior. What does God do? He gives us a Savior. In John 3:16 we read, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” God the Father has given us the Lord Jesus Christ.

Not only does God the Father give us Jesus, but he also gives us to Jesus. We know this because Jesus says that the Father has given us to him. He says, “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." (John 6:37-40) Here again we see that God the Father gives for the purpose of us having eternal life. He gives Jesus to us and us to Jesus so that we may have eternal life. And what exactly are we talking about when we speak of eternal life? Jesus answers this question for us in a prayer to his Father in John 17:3 when he said, “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Eternal life is this: Knowing the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Now if God the Father gives us to Jesus, does that not make him our savior as well? It does! We see this in 1 Corinthians 6:14 where Paul says, “And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.” Just as God the Father raised Christ from the dead, he raised us from death to life also.

In 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14 the Apostle Paul speaks of what God the Father has done. In writing to the Thessalonian Christians, Paul writes, “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Just as we read in John 6:37-40 about how God the Father had given us to Jesus, we read here in 2 Thessalonians that God the Father chooses people to be saved. How does he choose them? Through “sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” What this means is that ultimately, our salvation was a matter of God’s choice. God did not have to save us, but he freely chose to save us because that is what he desired to do. Not everyone is saved, but everyone is called to repent, and those who repent and come to faith in Jesus Christ they are the ones who have been saved and are prime examples of the Father’s loving choice. I’ll close with one other passage that speaks about what God the Father does, and that passage is Titus 3:4-6. Here we read, “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,”

If Jesus saves what does God do? The answer according to Titus 3:4-6 is that God saves too. God the Father saves us not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy. How does he do this? Through “sanctification by the Spirit and belief in truth” or to say it differently: “by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,” We’re talking about new birth here. Being born of the Spirit. Which is done through whom? Jesus Christ our Savior. Jesus saves and what does God do? God the Father saves too, but not apart from His Son, or His Holy Spirit.

That is my answer: God saves.

With that out of the way, I thought I would briefly comment on some of the previous responses to this question. Some have raised John 10:30 where Jesus says, "I and my Father are one." This really is a great passage to bring up in this discussion, but unfortunately it is a passage that often gets misinterpreted in the mix. When Jesus says, "I and my Father are one" he is not saying that they are the same person, but he is saying that they are one in purpose. Behind this statement of them being one in purpose is an even deeper meaning that speaks of both the Father and the Son being one in substance / essence / nature.

Jesus is not the same person as the Father, but is distinct from the Father. Jesus is God and the Father is God, but Jesus is the Son not the Father. These points may seem tedious, but they are absolutely necessary to distinguish when your dealing with biblical texts - for these truths really do matter greatly and can make or break someone's faith.

Jesus said "I and the Father are One". They are Father and Son, but of the same Spirit. God knows all, sees all, is everywhere at all times. Hope this helps some.

They're unified yet separate. Christ said, "Who so ever has seen Me, has seen the Father." Jesus does the Will of the Father. So if Jesus "saves" then that must be the Will of the Father.

The same...they are one and the same...
Isaiah knew this...
(Isa 43:10) Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
(Isa 43:11) I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior.

and so did Thomas...
(Joh 20:27) Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.
(Joh 20:28) And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

and so did all the Apostles..
Luk 1:47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior.

Joh 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?

Joh 8:19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

Joh 8:58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Joh 10:30 I and my Father are one.

Joh 10:37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
Joh 10:38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

(Joh 14:10) Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.
(Joh 14:11) Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
