She likes water a lot, but mostly for playing. Today she swam for the first time, but I was terrified. I encouraged her to go get her ball and she did it for me, only, but you could tell she was a little afraid to swim.

They're good swimmers.I have 2 and the older one we can't keep out of the water the younger one is still a little intimidated by it as yours is.
keep tossing that ball and having her go after it.Swimming is great exercise and will help build up her chest muscles while taking the stress of her weight off her joints.
If you're worried she'll get out too far put a life jacket on her and tie a long rope to it so she can swim but you still have some control in case she gets in trouble but keep a close watch on her to make sure she does'nt get tangled in the rope while trying to swim.

As far as dogs go, 99.99 % of all dogs can naturally swim. but Shepard are particularly strong swimmers and I have had many of them in the water. Like with any other case, start out small, don't take him out into 30 foot deep water and throw him out, swim a bit with him on the beach and see how he guages and reacts to the water first and then not having land under his feet. progress forward but always remember, your dog cannot tell you when he is to tired to continue, cramping, or out of breath so don't have him out for too long.

All dogs can swim! Just keep encouraging her to get into the water. Maybe even give her opportunities to get into the water with you there. This may reassure her that she is safe, but dont let her become reliant on this! Good Luck

yep.. my grandmother is a shepherd breeder.. they love water.. (well all dogs do)
They love nothing more than to run down to her pond or creek, play in the water, swim after each other and come back and shake all the mess all over us...
We take them to the lake fishing also.. they are in the water before we are..
