The bear is white because it is a polar bear. To travel said directions for said distances and arrive home it would have to be at one of the poles of the earth, hence a white polar bear.

if the bear leaves the north pole and heads south 1km and then turns east and walks east 1km and the turns back to the north and right back where he came from this is the only possible explanation for the color of the bear given the facts in the riddle

Actually the Bear is black..You are talking about the north pole and due to global warming it is now open water, so the bear would have to be walking on bottom till it drowned and wouldn't remain white. Floating up the rotting corpse would have Oil and other pollutants turning it's sad fur black..
