He is only two but I would like to instill in him the value of helping people. Is he too young or is there something that we can do together? Any suggestions?

I don't know where you are located but here in Central Florida we have an organization called Hands On that is an outlet for volunteer opportunity information. They have them sorted by age and there are things, I know, for children as young as four.

Some ideas - If he can tell the difference between different types of food (for example can tell a can of peas from a can of corn) he could help you sort donations at a local food bank; you could also take him to a senior center to "visit" - you would not believe how many of the residents get no visitors and the women especially love seeing the little ones; weeding the flower beds at any not-for-profit offices (you may need to point out which ones are weeds for him :-)). These are just a few ideas. I actually did informal "helping" when my kids were that age - we had a game where we would pick-up carts and put them inside on our way IN to the grocery store and we took cookies to the different fire houses to say "thank you" to the firemen (my son ESPECIALLY liked that!). It was more to instill the early lesson of - helping someone out or showing appreciation is something we should do everyday.

Hope that helps! - You obviously are a caring person who will raise caring children!

This is a great idea, but you'll want to start small with a two year old. Maybe he can decorate a piggy bank and together every day you can put some coins in for a charity. You could also have him help you give some food to a food bank/food pantry. I agree that he's too young to serve food at a homeless shelter, but these could be nice ways to begin.

Join a local volunteer group. They will find something you and your son can do together. I do not think serving food to the poor would be a good idea. Too much reality for a 2 year old!
