I was convicted about six months ago, but by the time I join it will be about two years from now. I have not talked to a recruiter yet just wondering if any of ya'll know. The conviction was in the state of texas, and the branch I was planning on joining was the Marine Corps. I was in the Marine Corps Reserve enlisted for six years and was activated for the war and returned with the plans to rejoin as an officer. I'm wondering if the conviction has ruined those plans. Thanks

With the Officer Corps this is a much different issue. They view this as a self-control problem. If you are a current Officer - this would yield a minimum General Officer Letter of Reprimand and would tail spin your career. You can speak to a recruiter, but I think you are in for a ruff ride. It is possible - but there are going to be lots of hoops to get through to obtain the waiver you will need.

I was in the Air Force and I was stationed with people who had DWIs before joining and received them after joining. You will have to get a waiver before joining which means you will have to write a letter explaining what happen, how your sorry, how you have changed and matured since then, what steps you have taken not to let this happen again, and how you have accepted responsibility for your actions.
I seriously doubt this will prevent you from becoming an officer especially since you are prior enlisted, AND THE MARINES REALLY NEED PEOPLE RIGHT NOW!
Don't let some recruiter tell you otherwise. I had a criminal record before joining the Air Force and was told by a recruiter that I could never join. Well I did and so have others who did much worse things then I did.
Think about it. Do you think all the people you were in the Marines with are wholesome and righteous?

The best thing you can do is to go to that recruiter and ask him. In turn he will find out for you. You need to plan ahead. In many states the 1st DWI or DUI offense in not a felony and may only be a misdemeanor. After so many months that conviction should no longer appear on your license. You should not lie about it though because you will be found out. You prior service record will say a lot for you. The military needs both qualified enlisted and commissioned officers. You now have and will have even more to offer after you obtain your degree. I can't see them turning you down for that one mistake. Of course, the Marine Corps is 'The Best' but in the event that you are turned down you can always check out one of the other Armed Services. Good Luck Marine! Semper Fi. NamVet

First off, the military does not recruit for helicopter pilots. You have to enlist, serve a few years and apply for flight school. The only exception is if you already have a pilot's license for rotary wing. And then you'd need recommendations. With your five DWIs you don't stand a chance, though. You have a habit of drinking and driving, which shows irresponsibility. How more MORE times have you NOT been caught drunk? I admire you for the desire to serve our country in an honorable way, but before you sign up, and assuming you are serious and didn't just post this question to earn Yahoo! points, you'd have to undergo some alcohol counseling. Otherwise your continued drinking will land you in deep ka-ka and you could face serious consequences.

You've got a problem.....
A Felony conviction is a automatic disqualifer. Worse than the criminal nature of it, it's the judgement used. A officer is a leader, a manger, and a example to others to follow. The days of Pappy Boyington in th Corps is long gone. We are not going to hand the keys to a $30 Million AV8B Harrier to a guy with DWI's.

To my knowledge, a DWI conviction is a misdemeanor in any state, and does not substantially effect a person's enlistment into the military. Consult a Marine recruiter to ascertain the consequences of your actions, and any future you might have in the Marine Corps.

the best answer is ..maybe..

the military is cracking down HARD on any and all alcohol related incidents, officer and enlisted alike. If you were already in, your career would have been over, period.

keep your nose squeaky clean for the next 2 years, and you MIGHT have a shot at a waiver.
