I am honestly thinking about joining the airforce, however I have heard some negative things about females joining the military. FIrst of all, I dont want 2 sexually harassed or not taken seriously. These are my top 2 fears. Is there anyone out there who can give me some honest advice about the airforce. I would also like 2 know how do they go about stationing people. Some people get stationed far away from home, while others are stationed very close to home. How do they go about determining this? Thanks in advance!!

A female in the military /Air Force Can ONLY be sexually harassed IF SHE FAILS to report it...Actually, there is very little problem between guys & women
You would have more problems in any bar than with guys you are stationed with..
AS for the getting stationed far from home....
You agree to serve in whatever branch of service AT THEIR DISCRETION...that means when, where and and the jib they need you to do...

I was in the Air Force from 2001-2004. They take sexual harassment seriously because of those incidents at Colorado Springs at the Air Force academy. I was the only girl working with all guys. Honestly they didn't give a damn that I was a girl. They didn't want to do the work either and were glad that someone did so they didn't have to.

The way they go about stationing people is based on the job and the needs of the Air Force. If the Air Force needs a lot of people in a certain job at a certain location that is where they are going to send people. Don't go in the Air Force expecting to stay close to home because it probably won't happen unless you pick a job where they need a lot of people everywhere. Some jobs they need a lot of people, but they don't have the job at every base. Don't let some recruiter convince you that you can stay close to home and there are programs and incentives to make it happen... Because there ain't none!
Just know that there is no way anymore that you can be in any branch of the military and not deploy for months at a time. The days of spending 20 years in the military and never deploying are long over. YOU WILL DEPLOY FOR MONTHS AT A TIME!! You also will not be staying in a hotel when you deploy, you will be staying in a tent sleeping on a cot with 30 others and showering in a open bay shower with these people. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!! The Air Force does not stay in hotels when they deploy or go on excercises!!!!
You don't need to worry about going in as a female because it is not more difficult. You will deploy and do the exact same things as the men no matter what anybody tells you. As long as you are o.k. with not being close to home and deploying for months at a time then go ahead and join. If you deal with it find something else to do. This is true with all the branches I don't care what anyone tells you.

Sexual harassment can happen if your in the military or if your not in the military. The Military takes it very seriously report there are more ways to report any harassment in the military. The best way is to stand up to any person and tell them to stop and you need to get a little tough to be taken seriously either while in the military or not in the military. Maybe talking with the Air Force Recruiter who can be stationed close to home for the first couple of years depending on your job classification then after that the Air Force can send you any where they need you.

Today most female Officers or NCO's are treated just like the male Officers or NCO's. Off and on you will find that there are some problems, but they are few and far apart. In the beginning the men didn't like the women to intrude and interfere with the way the business of combating had always been done, but that is not so anymore.
You will have some input in decisions concerning places where you will be stationed, but not much. The Air Force or any of the Armed Forces always have the last say. Most soldiers are happy to see the world, especially if the trip is paid for by the US Government. Certainly Iraq and areas of war are not desirable right now. My 16 years were great, and I would have liked to stay longer in the Air Force.

I've been involved with the AF for my entire life. My father was Active Duty (now a civilian working for the AF) and my husband is Active Duty. i have never heard of any kind of sexual haarassment in the ENLISTED Air Force. Yes, there have been some cases at the Academy but I've not really heard anything in the enlisted side of it. Everything is extrememly professional. My husband is a crew chief and works side by side with some of the smartest women I've ever met.
As far as duty stations are concerned, it all has to do with your job. You get sent pretty much where they need you based upon your job and qualifications. you can ask to be sent certain places (you have a "wish" list) but you can't count on being sent where you want to go. if you have issue with moving away from
home", don't join any military branch. Very few people are stationed in the same place for thier entire careers. Moving is one of the benefits to being military :0)

Good Luck!

You should join the Army. Trust me, the military is all about preventing sexual harassment. We have to go to classes all the time hearing about sexual harassment and you can report sexual harassment very easily. Females are taken seriously.

ive had a couple of friends go into the airforce reserves. both girls, they liked it. there isnt much harrassment nowadays. but if you want to go full time military. there is a very good chance you will get sent into a combat zone. im not sure how the stationing works for full time. i know if you go into the reserves you get to pick where you go. and have the option of working on the base full time, it also pays very well. when we went into Iraq my friend got sent to Greece, to replace the people that went into combat. id pick the reserves over full enlistment.

Stay home. Get your education. It's too much for you. you seem like a soft girl. and please take that as a positive comment. You have to be a little tough for military life.
