When you treat a period of time as an event, then that will be in the preterit. My childhood was (fue) a happy one. So your choice here is really between fue & estuvo. You've probably learned this ser/estar difference: La película es/está bueno. Where the former says it's generally considered a good film, whereas the latter says you think it's a good film. But in the preterit, ser/estar lose some of their distinction, and fue is also (and more commonly) used to express personal subjective opinion. Now, if you were doing a comparison between last Christmas and the ones in years before, then estuvo would work better: Compared to past Christmases, last year's was (estuvo) the best.

Infinitivo = infinitive
amar = to love

Presente = Present (used the same way as in english)
yo amo = i love
tú amas = you love
él/ella ama = he/she/it loves
nosotros amamos = we love
ustedes aman = you (plural) love
ellos/ellas aman = they love

Pretérito = Past (used the same way as in english)
yo amé = i loved
tú amaste = you loved
él/ella amó = he/she/it loved
nosotros amamos = we loved
ustedes amaron = you (plural) loved
ellos/ellas amaron = they loved

Futuro = Future (used the same way as in english)
yo amaré = i'll love
tú amarás = you'll love
él/ella amará = he/she/it will love
nosotros amaremos = we'll love
ustedes amarán = you (plural) will love
ellos/ellas amarán = they will love

Participio pasado (same as in english)
yo he amado = i have loved
tú has amado = you have loved
él/ella ha amado = he/she has loved
nosotros hemos amado = we have loved
ustedes han amado = you (plural) han amado
ellos/ellas han amado = they have loved

Gerundio (same as in english)
caminANDO por la calle me encontré a John = walkING down the street i ran into John
the verbs end in ando/iendo (ing in english)

Imperativo = Imperative
juega con nosotros = play with us (you singular)
ven conmigo = come with me (you singular)
jueguen con él = play with him (you plural)
vayamos al cine = let's go to the movies

Condicional presente (like in english)
compraría un auto = i would buy a car
tendría dinero = i would have money

Imperativo negativo = Negative imperative
no juegues con nosotros = don't play with us (you singular)
no vengas conmigo = don't come with me (you singular)
no jueguen con él = don't play with him (you plural)

Imperfecto is a little harder to explain cause it doesn't exit in english, it's used to say that something took place (or was going on) before another past action or that 2 things happened at the same time

yo no quería ir a la fiesta pero mi amigo me convenció= i didn't want to go to the party but my friend convinced me
yo estaba esperando el autobús cuando vi el accidente = i was waiting for the bus when i saw the accident

the conjugated form for this time in spanish is
yo ***aba or ***ía
tú ***abas or ***ías
él/ella ***aba ***ía
nosotros ***bamos or ***íamos
ustedes ***aban or ***ían
ellos/ellas ***aban or ***ían
with ***= the verb root

Modo subjuntivo presente = Subjunctive mood present (doesn't exist in english, it's used to express desire, wish, hope)
que tengas un buen día = [i hope that you] have a nice day
ojalá que ganes la carrera = i hope [that] you win the race

Modo subjuntivo imperfecto = Subjunctive mood imperfect (doesn't exist in english and is used to describe hypothetical situations)

si ella me amara, sería muy feliz = if she loved me i would be very happy
si hubiera hecho lo que me dijiste, no estaría en problemas = if i had done what you told me i wouldn't be in troubles.

hope this helps

Check out this page: http://esl.about.com/library/grammar/blgr_verbforms.htm

It has many of the forms, although not all (if my Spanish is correct).
