Quality is the same for all Digital Video (DV). DV is output at 500 lines per inch or so, versus analogue video that was at around 240 lines per inch.

The big difference is in the reliability of the media. MiniDV tapes are the most reliable media - 99.999% - I've never had one fail. DVD disks on the other hand a very unreliable with a failure rate of about 10% during recording. Once they have been written to, DVD's are very reliable. While MiniDV tapes are a little more money compared to DVD's, they are worth it. You'll never lose a moment with MiniDV tape.

To transfer MiniDV to your PC you need to have an IEEE 1394 port or FireWire as it's commonly called. You can read the DVD's written by a camcorder in your PC but there are a lot of file formatting issues and other technical stuff that most folks don't want to know about. FireWire is the easiest and the fastest way to get DV on to your PC.

If you are considering buying a DV camcorder to edit the video on your PC, have a hard look at your PC. It may not be adequate. If you don't have at least the following your experience is going to be s-l-o-w:

3 GHz CPU
1 Gb RAM
250 Gb disk (2 drives is better)
DVD burner
IEEE 1394 port

I recommend 2 hard drives - 1 for software and 1 for video. 10 minutes of DV takes up 10 Gb of hard drive roughly.

A colour printer is handy for printing labels for your final production DVD's.

I would strongly not advice in purchasing a miniDVD cam
1. Disks are pricey
2. Same quality as miniDV (SD)
3. Less capacity in most cases

Overall miniDV is the way to go and very easy to import especially on amature editing software.

this is astonishing on some situations because of the fact once you checklist on DVD format you get 540 strains of definition and once you checklist on MiniDV tape you will get 720 or extra strains . yet in general relies upon on what digicam you have .
