if a cop tells you to get out of the car then do it, but if he wants to search your car then he has to have a reason meaning proof of wrong doing. Now if he smells alcohol or pot, then you are screwed, but if you have done nothing and he wants to search you for no reason, then tell him NO sir! Ask him why he wants to search your car and ask what you did as the driver to make him want to search your car? if he has no reason then ask for a search warrent. You have the right to say no and if he doesnt have probable cause then the hell with him. He will call the dispatch and nothing will be done, maybe

Yes you do. That officer can also search you and your vehicle (contrary to popular belief even the truck area) if he has reasonable suspicion. The Supreme Court has ruled on this numerous times and has ruled this type of search is not a violation of your 4th amendment rights. The Court ruled that the 4th amendment does not apply to your vehicle. Only to your home. The best way to deal with this situation is to comply (even if you dont agree) and let an attorney handle it. If you get angry of say the wrong thing to the police your charges will start adding up quickly. In which case you'd be in pretty bad shape in court.

You basically do have to do what the police officer asks you to do because he/she can always claim that there is probable cause. They have that option with vehicles. I also must get out of the car if they request that you do so. I am in my 2nd year of grad school, studying criminal justice (not intending to become a police officer though...) If you deny an officer's request they are able to use their discretion when it comes to what they choose to do, or not do, to you. A lot of times it may simply be a power trip or a need to make a ticket quota, and a lot of times it may be legitimate stop...the point is that you have to obey the officer in both cases or you may receive a ticket...even if it isn't for what you were originally stopped for. It is just one of those things that you have to deal with sometimes. A lot of times you can only exercise your "rights" at the time of, or after, arrest....i.e. Miranda. The bottom line is that police officers have a lot of discretion at their fingertips ands this places them in a position of power that you simply don't want to toy with unless or until you are processed into the criminal justice system.

A police officer asks you to step out of your car for safety reasons. If they have 'probable cause', they can search your car (example - someone in a red pickup robs a liquor store and you are driving a red pickup in the area). If you give them trouble, they can arrest you for obstruction, even if you did nothing wrong to begin with. So, be nice, do what they ask & everyone will be happier for it.

Yes you need to do what the nice officer tells you to do. No they cannot search your car, but they can search the passenger compartment in you immediate area if there is a Reasonable reason to do so. To search your trunk or locke glove box they do need permission or a warrant. Don't speed, drive like an asshole, drink and drive, do drugs and drive.

they can do pretty much whatever they want to. u have the right to say no if they request to search your car but it wont do you any good, they will just call in and get a search warrant right then and hold you there alot longer. always step out of the car, you might get shot if you dont cooperate with them.
