To an extent.Obviously we wouldnt be here if we werent created, but for arguments sake, yes,it would be necessary to invent the idea of Him because all things lose meaning without faith in a Divine plan and purpose.

Voltaire was an extremely hateful man with the urbanity of a disguised angel. He believed stupid things and hated good people. Here is his evolution quote Messy pilgrims blamed for puzzling fossils By R. de Monastersky PARIS, 1746Monsieur de Voltaire this week offered a startling new theory to explain the origin of fossils, a problem that has vexed philosophers since Aristotle. In an Italian essay, the French writer proposes that fossilized bones found today in the mountains represent picnic remains left by passing pilgrims and crusaders centuries ago. "Rotten fish were thrown away by a traveler and were petrified thereafter," says Voltaire. The pilgrim-picnic-petrifaction hypothesis clashes with the standard prayer-book explanation that fossils are a reflection of God's powers. The Royal Office of the Fourth Estate and Public Information put out a release saying, "Monsieur de Voltaire is clever indeed, but we are not amused by his musings. If he persists, he will find himself once again ensconced in a Bastille cell, this time without his linen handkerchiefs." Leading scientists also have weighed in on the new theory. Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, called Voltaire a buffoon. "The fossils present in the Alps are not the tastiest varieties of fish and would make a poor lunch," says Buffon.

That would mean a world truly created by meaningless Darwinian mutation, which would not lead to creatures driven by a search for meaning and purpose beyond simple survival. In such a world, the most evolved creatures would be those most adept at reproducing. In case anyone hasn't noticed, Muslims kill themselves, Hindus cant wait to leave for Nirvana, Christians prefer to put their lives in danger just for the chance to tell someone about Jesus. These behaviors do not make sense in a Darwinian world. That is why I cannot conceive of a religious world possibly existing where no God existed. The invention of a God serves no evolutionary benefit. But lets say evolution is true, what I find interesting is that religion would then be a product of evolution. In that case religion has been selected by Darwinism as the most benefical for survival. And scientists who praise and defend Darwinism are actually working against it by criticizing religion which amounts to the most ironic inconsistency.

I am a Christian, but I agree with you for many reasons. It is something that I learned in Psy. class many years ago. I was also thinking about this very think while watching the new James Bond movie. I was thinking of the freedom that people have who are Psychopaths. I think that if there were no God, there would be a very good reason to invent one. It would help maintain a civil society. Some might argue the opposite way, but I think a little fear does some people a lot of good.

I do not agree because I believe that God is real, and was not something that was invented out of mid air. I will always believe that. I don't think 2000 years ago some guy called Jesus said, "Hey, I want to be famous. I'll be a prophet."
No, He was sent BY God, and he was God's son. I tottaly disargree with that quote.

No I don't agree because if God didn't exist, we wouldn't exist to invent anything.

definately not, I do not, agree, and that is because God is not an invention but that does depend on which god you' re talking about, because even as the Bible says there are many gods, but there is only one true God and his name is Jehovah!(Psalm83:18 ;Exodus6:2,3 ;,3:15 Isaiah42:8)But many people both today and in centuries in the past have rejected the true God, and instead, made up, for themselves valueless gods that cannot do anything for them(1Samuel8:7)

I just don't see the necessity. But perhaps god was invented to get people to believe that somebody is watching and they should behave morally and not err.

Yes, most likely people just need to believe that there is someone in control and that they may just be in the favor of that someone. People invent and reinvent God for themselves all the time. The most popular is hopeless situations (terminal illness, incarceration, extreme poverty, etc).

Yes.As a child you look to mummy and daddy. They are your creators. As you get older and become more responsible for your life, they are no longer so important to you,but a lot of people need an anchor in their life,to feel that something or someone is helping them ,guiding them, and looking after them.
