I have sp1 and want to download sp2, but whenever I go to the microsoft update site it searches for new updates for a very long time. I stopped at 20 minutes or so. Also the automatic updates at the task bar is making no progress (at 0%). My copy is fully legal. Also, when I accepted new updates via automatic updates there were 30+ updates that I approved but after 60+ minutes there has still been no progress whatsoever even though the total memory needed was no more than 100mb (I think)

Thanks

(And yes I sent this twice sorry for the confusion)

Make sure you have enabled updates. Also, try doing a disk defragment that way it speeds up downloads. If you have dial-up that also causes downloads to be super slow. Try getting a faster connection and try again. Also make sure you are connected to the Internet securely. It does no good if you tend to have a broken connection which makes the download abort unintentionally.

Why don't you turn on automatic updates and set a time for this to occur via the Task Scheduler:

To turn on Automatic Updates

You must be logged on as a computer administrator to complete this procedure.

Open System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
– or –
If you are running Windows 2000, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Automatic Updates.

Click Automatic (recommended).

Under Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them, select the day and time you want Windows to install updates.
Notes

To open System, click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
Automatic Updates provides high-priority updates, which include security and other critical updates that can help protect your computer. It's a good idea to visit the Windows Update Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/) on a regular basis to get optional updates, such as recommended software and hardware updates, that can help improve your computer's performance.

1. Closed all open programs, including McAfee or other Anti-virus program.

2. Delete C:\Windows\System32\CATROOT2 folder.

3. Repeated the attempt to install Windows Updates.

4. Check the problem.
