I have OCD. Things like handwashing, counting, etc., are ways in which the symptoms manifest themselves, but not true symptoms in and of themselves. One main factor of OCD is having repetitive, uncontrollable thoughts that something bad, good or otherwise will happen unless you do certain things, usually a certain number of times. For example, you might think that everything you touch is covered with germs and you'll get sick unless you wash your hands every time you touch something. Or, it may be that you think your hands will only truly be clean if you wash them 3 times in a row every time you wash them. No, it doesn't make any sense--that's OCD. Another main factor is having to do things the "right" way. You may have a certain way your towels need to be folded, or you may have to enter a room a certain way, left foot first maybe. If these things are not done the "right" way, it will bother you until the "problem" is corrected, even to the point of physical discomfort. OCD is an illness and can interfere with daily life and work. If you think you may have it, please seek help with a therapist, preferably a psychiatrist so they can prescribe medication if they deem it necessary. And don't feel weak about seeking help or taking meds. This is an illness just like any other illness that may require going to the doctor and taking medicine to feel better. Sending you good thoughts! :-)
