I am aquainted with an extremely nice lady who says her church is charismatic. I'm not looking for a church to belong to and I've never felt any need to belong. She is NOT recruiting but I feel a connection with her.(NOT NECESSARILY HER CHURCH)
What does it mean that a church is "charismatic"?

My personal view of the Charismatic movement...
1) Belief that God covers it all.. God is larger than any event in a person's life.
2) The Supernatural of the Bible has not left us. If anything the Holy Spirit(Holy Ghost) is more needed today than even sent after God gave it too us.
All the "Miracles" of the Bible are still ours to claim.
3) Worship is a full & wonderful event to fill us with God's presence, power, joy, peace..heal us, guide us, walk with us. Help us cope with the world as it is today.

Charasmatics generally concentrate on the the book of Acts and the gospels in the Bible. If you're curious check out the first few chapters of Acts. This is how the church was established after the ascension of Christ. It explains that after people become believers they recieved the Holy Spirit and they were given certain spiritual gifts. Charasmatics believe that people have still have these gifts today whereas other demoninations believe that these gifts were just for belivers at that time.

If this lady is extremely nice and you feel a connection with her, it's worth it to check it out. God works in mysterious ways and might be trying to tell you something. Just because you go doesn't mean that you have to belong to that church, there's really no commitment that you have to make except to have an open mind and heart so that you will be receptive to what God wants you to know.

Basically, Charismatic christians are a group of so called 'beleivers' or 'believing churches' who have a fervent devotion with enthusiasm. These group of christians went out of the 'church' for reasons that they felt the existing churches did not have a 'lively worhip service' not did they excercise the gifts of the Holy Spirit like speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing and so on.

Just a brief explanation though; speaking in tongues was necessary and God did allow that in the first century church. After the ascension of Christ into heaven, the disciples were out into the world proclaiming Christ. Lot many people gathered to hear the disciple's testimony of Christ, and the gathering consisted of people from different background, culture, language and ethinicity too. It is quite obvious that the disciples as such were not educated and the possibility of them being multilingual cannot be taken much into account or them having a 'foreign tongue' is unlikely.

So, God intervened and to make the gospel understood by all that gathered, He gave the gift of tongues to the preachers and to their own astonishment, began to speak in the languages that they never could comprehend nor were familiar, and that 'gift of the tongue' was a blessing to those who never understood the local language that was being used by the preachers, for the 'visitors' heard the gospel in their own native tongue.

The same was with the prophecy too and the gift of interpretation. In the first century church when the gift of tongue was well known and recognised , the provision of the gift of interpretation too was prominent within the church. And all these gift were basically meant for the edification of the church and not an 'individual's' property as it is claimed for in the present day.

As for your friend and the church she attends with, give it a try, and if God wants you to know something He sure will, cos man to this day has not known His ways. And if u just feel connected to her and not the church she goes to , then keep her church away and cling on to her.

Well! My feelings about the charismatic movement is neutral. What i personally feel is that, nothing is really important to me other than recognising that i am a sinner, believing that Christ died for me and i've been washed in His blood, cleansed and made presentable in the presence of God the Father.

There are charismatic churches in most denominations. The term has become a little vague, but basically it means belief in present day spiritual gifts. Charismatic churches usually tend to be a bit more spontaneous in worship than others, and you might find their worship services a little more exciting. Controversy between charismatic and no-charismatic churches? Well, some believe the charismatic churches are putting toomuch emphasis on the spiritual gifts and not enouth on the Lord. Charismatics would usually reply by the emphasis they have put on worship, and that their belief in spiritual gifts comes from a simple confidence in the Lord.
There is much variety among churches that would be called "charismatic", but you will usualluy find a warm enthousiasm in their worship.

I spent twenty years in a Pentecostal church (Church of God - TN), and am honestly glad to be out. I think each person has to find a church that is a good fit for them, and this church was just not right. However, when you grow up with something, it can be hard to get away. The thing with Pentecostals is that they believe the Holy Spirit will always manifest itself in a person via speaking in tongues. Both the Assembly of God and Church of God stipulate that the Holy Spirit is evidenced in a person's life via speaking in tongues. This, of course, leads to the "controversy" of loud services, because people often speak in such tongues, interpret, sing loudly, have more updated (and often more modern) music, etc. My problem is that tongues is a gift given to some, and the Bible clearly states to refrain from doing it in the presence of non-believers, because they'll think you're mad. Doesn't quite match their doctrine, right? However, being in a dead church isn't necessarily the best, either. Churches that are so tied into pomp and circumstance (many Catholics, Methodists, Lutherans, Presbyterians, etc.) that they forget to let God into the service. So, that's my advice: seek a church that is not about "Church" and not about "Whose gift is the greatest" but one where the faith is sincere, the people are humans trying their best and the preacher never strays from the Bible! I found this in a nice southern Baptist church, and have never been happier.

Hello!

Charismatic refers to the gifts (charisms) of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit works through the Church. In this sense, all Christian churchs are charismatic. But the churches who specifically call themselves "charismatic" tend to specifically emphasize the fruits and gifts (charisms) of the Holy Spirit, such as praying in tongues, healing, slaying in the Spirit, etc.

most believe in speaking in tongues and healing. i would suggest reading 1 john 4:1 and 1 cor 1:10 most cant agree on basic truths of the bible that's why there are so many christian faiths all claiming to be the truth.

They usually "speak in tongues" and have emotionally exhilirating worship. Usually very active and believe that God speaks to people today.
