I work at a liquor store and I have noticed that chardonnay and certain other wines (like Pinot Noir) have a sort of bell-shaped bottle., as opposed to the normal shape that others have. I have asked my manager and she is stumped too. Can anybody help?

Each wine region has its own shape of bottle by custom. The tradition goes back to the early days of wine in bottles. The chardonnay bottle is a reflection of the Burgundy wine region. This does not hold as true with American, Chilean, and Australian wines though your better wine makers follow the it.

Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come from the Burgundy region of France. As the previous respondents have noted, different wine regions of the world have historically gravitated towards different bottle shapes. Many "new world" wineries have opted to continue the tradition of using the original bottle shapes for bottlings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Some historical wine producing regions have particular shapes that they use traditionally. Some newer winemakers use particular shapes to give thier wine associations with particular regional wines. The different shapes customarily used for particular wines are just an evolved thing, like wine culture. Bottle shape has absolutely no impact on taste or fermentation, although some beleive there is impact on the breathing process when opening a bottle of wine. The one exception is sparkling wines, which need thicker walls to deal with the extra pressure.

the wine bottle shape has to do with the region the wine comes from. certain wines originally come from certain regions and france and they shape their wine bottles differently. bourdeaux has the "normal" looking wine bottle things like cab go in there, where pinot noir comes from the burgandy region, and they go in the different botle shape. theres also german shapes and many others, but the bottle shape comes from the region
