I had lived with dogs my whole life, from the moment I was born. But the first dog I got that was actually 'my' dog, I got while I was twelve. It was a Chow Chow, a Spitz dog like the Pomeranian, and looks fairly similar appearance-wise. I had no major issues. But you have to know you have to make a commitment. Are you willing to exercise/walk, brush, train, play with, care for, and love this dog for the next 10-15 years of your life? I did not know how difficult it would be, but I'll tell you, having a loving companion is certainly worth it. Pomeranians should be easier to care for then a Chow Chow, due to the lesser need for exercise and smaller size. But was certainly my biggest issue. The Spitz group tend to get knots behind their ears and manes. The Pomeranians must be brushed daily. You can probably get by by doing just a quick brushing each day, but make sure you have a major brushing every week. So make sure you're willing to spend the time brushing it. Training is vital. This must be done 5-6 times a week, but I would really suggest daily training. Remember, training doesn't have to be in long periods and can just be 15-20 minutes, since puppies do get easily distracted. You have to remember to walk this dog everyday or make sure it has plenty of time to do some running outside. Playing is important and strengthens your bond. This dog will probably end up being your best friend, so the better the friendship, the better the dog. And remember, this is YOUR dog. You are responsible for it. So the only person who can answer if you should get the dog is you. If you're willing to make the commitment, then go and get your BFF.

You will never get her to stop barking, and the fluffy little butt is hard to keep clean. The grooming costs a lot. They have a lot of broken legs just from furniture falls and jumps off the steps. Poms are territorial and will attack people, kids included, and other dogs. You can just google Poms and get lots of character descriptions. Personally, I think there are better breeds for a family with kids. Poms are high maintenance. Go to Yahoo pets and take a quiz about what would be the ideal dog for you and yours. There are dozens of toy breeds and you will find a breed more suitable. Also, a small dog from the humane society could be the ideal pet. I have Pugs so I am prejudiced. But they are the most lovable beings on earth, and I have three sitting on my love seat with me right now. Best of luck to you!

My in-laws breed Poms. They are fairly good natured dogs and they seem to be pretty nervous around kids. The downside to them - They bark almost constantly, jump around all over people, very hyper-active, they stink something awful and shed more than any other dog I have ever seen in my life. Since their hair is so long the shedding really is a problem. I would NEVER have one of them in my house because of the odor and the massive hairballs they leave behind.

Please understand, I am not trying to be mean here, just giving you my honest opinion. I assumed thats what you wanted. LOL

they are hyper dogs, love to bark a lot and tend to choose one person to stick too and arent too patient with children.. They can be socialized into the family though, but they might nip at a child who pulls at them a lot. You need to keep them clean and groomed constantly with all that hair..
Go for a tiny poodle or a chihuahua if you want a sweeter tiny dog.. of course poodles need hair care also.. But you can just shave them all off leaving just a few ankletts of hair and then just wash them often,, no mess fuss.. I have had all 3 and I prefer chihuahuas best..

Most breeders will not sell them to families with little kids, they're too fragile. They tend to have respiratory (collapsing trachea) and knee problems, plus housebreaking them is next to impossible. If you can get beyond that, they are the sweetest, most loyal and entertaining dogs you will ever adopt. I've had my 5 pound parti for over 5 years and would die without her. She barks only when someone comes to the door, she greets everyone and isn't "nervous" and shaking all the time. She hardly sheds at all, something I understand is in the parti line, and I would recommend them to anyone. Good luck.

These are highly nervous, active, yapping and barking all the time. They run and jump around and are really not that good with kids. So if you do not mind all the barking and noise they make go for it. I personally find them cute but irritating.

They are not good around kids because of their size, they yap all the time and require a lot of daily grooming. I would not own one.
They also like to nip at your heels when you walk.
