I don't agree with your vet. Get him to a vet as soon as possible. It is now probably too late to make him vomit the stuff up but they can get him started on vitamin K injections and/or tablets.

Rat poison is not like other poisons - it can take DAYS for them to get sick and then it may be too late. Prevention is better than cure in this case so don't mess around - get to a vet.

Best of luck with your dog.

Rat poison is a blood thinner. It works by causing the rats to bleed to death internally. If it were my dog, I'd call another vet. They can give a shot of Vitamin K, and can transfuse blood if necessary. I would try and see approx how much was left and would refill the box, if poss. That will give you an idea of how much the dog ingested to tell the vet. But with your dog being so small, I'd definitely get another opinion. Call a 24 hr clinic. They won't be so likely to blow you off because they don't want to work on a holiday weekend. Make sure you vac *** your couch real well, so the dust doesn't absorb in thru your skin. It will work on people, too. All it is is Warfarin. Ever heard of Coumadin? All the same. Good luck!

I don't agree with the vet's advice at all. I had a Pomeranian mix that got into decon (mouse poison) and he had to take meds for a week or two and the vet was very concerned. We were at our summer home in VA and the vet there didn't even want us to leave until the dog was better, she considered it very serious. He had to take vitamin K pills for about 2 weeks because rat poison has a blood thinner in it.
My dog was about 20 pounds and I'd say yours is smaller.
I would try and get another vet's opinion.

If that rat poison replaced into located the place your canine might have eaten it, you had greater appropriate be risk-free than sorry. call the emergency vet now and take the canine in. He might desire drugs to help him vomit up the poison and coat his abdomen to ward off absorption, and he will additionally desire diet ok as the two an injection then pills or pills on my own. He may additionally desire bloodwork. Rat poison motives an animal's blood to provide up with the flexibility to clot, so which you will no longer see signs and symptoms of ailment for quite a few days, at which era your canine will initiate bleeding into his urine, his stool, his dermis, and vomiting blood. it does no longer be solid to attend and notice if there's a first rate threat he have been given into the poison. call the vet, take him in, and take the equipment with you. now could be rather much too previous due.

Rat poison is bad stuff, but doubt there's much you can do at this point. What it does is cause thinning of the blood so the critter bleeds to death. You would see blood coming from the openings in his body. But your best bet is to listen to your vet and don't EVER leave stuff like that where an animal can get it. I hope and pray your dog is okay.. could be, hopefully, he just messed around in it and didn't eat it.

Go to an emergency vet NOW!!! NOW!!! Take some of the poison with you and the box if possible. Rodenticides are extremely toxic and cause a lingering, painful death from internal bleeding. This is an emergency and your dog may die if you don't get him/her to a vet now.

I know the vet said to keep an eye on him. What I'd do is still take him to the local animal hospital asap. If not, call 911 then immediately!
