Worry more about your cat than the vet's reaction. Make sure he knows you are concerned and need his advice on what to do to reduce your cat's weight. There are special diet foods for kitties.

I have a fat cat also. She is 4 years old and 25 pounds. The vet hasnt really said anything about her weight but she is on diet kitty food and she is very active when she plays with the dogs and kids. We think she is part bobcat. She dosn't appear to have any health or breathing problems. Perhaps the vet will recommend you try to engage him in moderate exercise. Try to feel him a few times a day rather that leaving food out for him at all times as well. Free feeding animals tend to be more overweight than animals on a feeding schedule. He will try to make you feel guilty though but dont give in. I promise he wont starve although he will think he is. Good luck.

Be patient. It is a bad idea for cats to lose weight too fast. If the vet wants him on the diet cat food, he must be too fat. I've never seen a cat use a treadmill, not even if it comes with a training mouse. Try splitting Kitty's meal in to two or three portions and hide them around the house. Cat will have to look for his food and get some exercise. He will be less bored. I think some cats eat out of boredom. Get him some new toys and play with him too.

There are different types of food out there for weight control; perhaps you should try some of those. Or just look at the instructions on the bag or cans of food you have now and follow the recommended daily amount instead of just pouring food in the dish until it's full. Also, try to play with your cat a little more so he'll get exercise.
And seriously, your vet is not there to "scare" you or get mad at you. The vet is not particularly concerned with your personal fears or your opinion of him/her at all. The veterinarian is there to help keep your cat healthy. Instead of acting like the vet's job is to intimidate you, speak to him/her like a rational adult who seeks information. Ask what type of diet would be recommended to get your cat back down to a healthy weight, and if there are any health concerns you should be aware of for now, like diabetes.

You need to cut down on his food. If you leave food down for him all day, don't. Restrict it to once or twice a day feedings. Make sure you are feeding him good food, and nothing fattening. Real meat should be the first ingrediant in any pet food you buy - not corn or starch. If you feed him only wet food, slowly switch to dry. Wet food is more fattening for pets.
Make sure he gets enough exercise. If he's lazy, get a cat harness and try to take him for walks. Cats love the outdoors, and it's safe for them to explore - as long as they're on a leash. Play with him more. You can also try and switch him to some pet food that's for fat cats, that's designed to get them to lose weight. PetsMart and Petco would sell them - ask one of the associates there.
Also, if your vet notices how overweight your cat is, he or she won't be mad - they'll just be disappointed. He or she will also help you find ways to get your cat to lose weight, and will more than likely suggest a good weight-loss food to feed your cat from now on.
It's important your cat not be overweight - he will live a much longer life, and not develope health or heart problems later on.

So why would the vet get mad its not his cat!! Go see him and get your kitty on a proper diet with the proper amount of food. You are not doing him any favours by overfeeding him.

Bring him to the vet and get him on a vet approved diet. Obesity will kill your cat.

Learn the appropriate amount of food to feed him, start feeding him ''lite'' cat food, play with him to induce exercise, and DON'T give in and constantly give him treats throughout the day.
30lbs is EXTREMELY overweight, and very unhealthy for your cat. He could get many medical problems, due to that.
