If there was no one on the train, he must have been the engineer.
Also, engineers use to always carry red handerchiefs (or flags) to scare off cows that wandered on the tracks.
So, he saw that the train was going to crash, and decided to jump instead of crashing.

Ah yes, plenty frustrating. Riddles are nice, but only if they make sense. If you told it exactly as your teacher did, your teacher is a Grade A Nimrod.
I've heard this riddle, it is about the guy being blind and having eye surgery to regain his sight, then going through a tunnel and thinking he's gone blind again. But you can't say he's a happy man, or the suicide bit doesn't work. He's not happy, he's crushed that he is 'blind again'
I hate these sorts of 'riddles' that don't make logical sense. Like the one about the dead man in the field with a straw in his hand with mountains visible in the distance. The answer - he jumped from a hot air balloon that was going to crash into the mountains and kill all aboard after they drew straws and he lost. Without his weight, the balloon could rise above the mountains.
A) The mountains were off in the distance
B) A hot air balloon crash into a mountainside has about a 0% chance of killing all aboard at those speeds (no mention of gale force winds)
C) To rise above mountains they'd have all asphyxiated or frozen anyway in an unprotected hot air balloon basket
D) They could just turn off the flame and descend gently
E) They would have just thrown out the lawyer anyway
F) Your teacher should be blinded on a train for giving you such a simlarly idiotic riddle

I heard a similar riddle once. The answer to this one I think may be the same.
The man had just recently regained eye-sight after being blind for a very long time. He was not paying attention and when the train went through a tunnel and everything went black, he thought that he had gone blind again and hence thought that there was no point of living any further. so he jumped off of the train. I'm not sure what the scarf had to do with anything though.
I'm not sure if that is correct but you might want to ask your teacher.

Handkerchief, eh? Sounds like someone was trying to rob the train. When a gun was pointed at his back, the man jumped to try and save his life (which didn't happen). The criminal dropped his handkerchief and either jumped later on and they haven't found him yet, or some other explanation. But I'm leaning toward train theif. Could be wrong. But yay for your teacher to get your brains working, regardless of the finer details that seem to be upseting the other readers.

maybe he didn't commit suicide- how would anyone know that for certain. maybe he was waving to someone and fell out of the train..I think your teacher is giving you an exercise in logical thinking and a lesson on not making assumptions- do not jump to the wrong conclusions, question everything, and make sure you know the facts before coming up with a final decision- I think that is what your teacher is setting before you

He is the guy driving the train. He sees another train coming and jumps off. They find the handkerchief in the wreckage but not the guy.

Because the crystal methamphetamine he took before he sniffed the airplane glue on the red handkerchief made him think he could fly. He wasn't thinking about the reality of the situation. Do you have a better guess?

He didn't jump off. The engineer threw him off and the man grabbed the engineer's red handkerchief as he was falling. The engineer did it!
