Great question!
I guess it all depends on what you think and your beliefs. I think God created us in his image but we over time have projected our image of him back.

God created man in His image. Man tries to create images of God based on our his/her own personal image. That's why so many people are up in arms about our traditional pictures of Jesus Christ. There has been so much controversy about what Jesus really looked like. Nobody knows. We have to draw upon our own imagination only.
Now, the men who tried to create gods in their image always saw those gods and eventually themselves destroyed. Look at the Aztecs for an example. God will only let that kind of thing go on for so long.

My own personal beliefs are that a "higher power" came first, and that higher power created all of us.
Besides, that, we created our "gods". This might be a shocker to some, but I believe we created our conception of them.
Scientists are looking at this now. In most every civilization, low and behold, the gods happen to be dressed exactly like the people who live there.
That does not mean there is not a creator, just that we in the past have tended, just being human, to conceptualize the diety in a human form.

God created Himself in our image, so that we may relate better. Still, it did not work even after taking the nails and dying for us.
It is good that you know the difference, so that more of us would fully understand the capacity of His greatness and love for us. Sacrificing His only Son that we might live by learning the simple lesson He came to teach us, "LOVE", which is the only way off of planet school to heaven. That is what is meant when you hear, you can't get to heaven without Jesus, it is what He taught us, "LOVE", you must stop hating and start loving, to get to heaven.
God bless us all...
