I am a great fan of the chihuahua. I have 3 of them. The only problem I have had was the housebreaking but with a lot of patience that was resolved. They are one owner dogs though, so if you want a dog that is fiercely loyal to you and small and portable perhaps a chihuahua is a good choice.

Miniature Schnauzers I have one and it's sooo cute and soooo funny. I used to have a Bichon Frise, but it was so high maintenance that we had to get rid of it, the Miniature Schnauzer is not. It is very smart and very small. Ours is about 16 pounds and a little under 10 inches tall. It is so cute and loyal. It is not supposed to be good around kids, but my family consists of two children and he does just fine. The kids ADORE him, as do I. It is so cute. I love him so much. They bark some, but not too much. This dog is not very high maintenance and is a LOVELY dog. I have had several different breeds ranging from Penbroke Welsh Corgies, Bichons, to Schnauzers. I have to say that Corgies are very small and a good dog also, these dogs are also worth looking into. For today...Miniature Schnauzers get my top vote with Corgies coming in second.

I have had two Cocker Spaniels and I loved both of them. The coat is a little high maintenance (keeping them groomed) but they were the best behaved, friendliest, loyal, smart and really really cute little dogs I ever had.
Whatever dog you choose, make sure you get them from a breeder and not a doggie store at the mall.
And don't forget there are rescue leagues for all breeds where you could get a dog that is already trained who really needs a good home.
I have a Beagle now (don't do it!!!!)

I have to disagree with most of the people here. I have always preferred a mixed breed, especially one you can get from the Humane Society. Mixed breeds are generally of better temperament.
I also prefer smaller dogs but my rule of thumb is... Small enough to be small but not small enough to "break" if you step on it. :o)
Our last dog was a Sheltie/Terrier mix, weighing in at around 27 lbs. If I had to go with a pure breed it would definitely be a Sheltie but they can be very needy and they do shed.

My favorite "breed" is not a recognized breed it is my Bichonpoo (1/2 Bichon Frise 1/2 Poodle). She is 4 months old and currently weighs 5 lbs she will weigh about 10 lbs when full grown. She IS NOT a barker, she is a loving mellow dog. Very happy, friendly and outgoing. Loves everyone and all other animals. She is very smart and easily trainable. She is hypoallergenic does not shed needs very little grooming. She is an all around GREAT DOG.

Go to a dog show in your area to see all the breeds out there. Talk to breeders who have experience with these different breeds. Reputable breeders want their puppies to go to the best homes possible and are very honest about the pros and cons of the breed they have. If they felt the dog you had in mind probably wouldn't be a good match, they likely wouldn't sell you a puppy. Do lots of research...you get what you pay for.

Every one here is going to tell the breed of dog they have is the best dog for kids, well a lot of them are wrong. You need to research the many different breeds and make an educated decision on what you think is the best breed for you and your families lifesyle. AKC has a web site with descriptions of all recognized breeds of dog. AKC.org You could also read a few books like Encyclopedia of Dog Breeds, or Idiots Guide to Chosing, Buying and Raising a Dog.
If properly trained and embraced as a beloved member of the family, any breed can make a great pet. With that said, some dogs are seen as more “kid-friendly” than others and, as a result, have become extremely popular among families. According to the AKC, the five most popular breeds in the United States are:
Labrador Retrievers are by far America’s most popular dog—more than 140,000 Lab puppies were registered last year with the AKC—and have a reputation for being playful, hardworking and affectionate toward children. The Lab is easily trained and is highly respected for his prowess at many jobs: as a guide dog for the disabled, a search-and-rescue dog, and for narcotics detection.
Golden Retrievers are sporty, easy to train and strong, but their most outstanding trait is character. They are outgoing and devoted companions to people of all ages, happy and trusting. They make great hunting companions, too.
German Shepherd are noble in appearence and character. This breed's courage, steadfast heart, and keen senses have endeared him to families for generations. Active and outdoorsy, German Shepherds are very fond of children and make wonderful companions.
Beagles love being around people and other animals. They are gentle, happy companions who thrive on affection and attention. They are also clever, quick, and, most of all curious. They need plenty of active exercise.
Dachshund has a lively, upbeat personality—spunky, curious and friendly. Originally bred to hunt badgers, Dachshund’s love to dig, romp and run. They are affectionate, especially with children, and enjoy going for walks and other forms of exercise. All of these breeds have a life span of at least 12 years.
You should do your research before you bring any animal into your home and you could even go to shelters and check out the dogs they have for adoption.

How about visiting your local animal shelter-they have dogs in all shapes, sizes and ages who desperately need a good loving home--you also will possibly be saving one of God's most precious creations from senseless euthanasia!
These animals have been neglected, abandoned , abused, etc.. and what better Christmas present than to provide an animal a home where love and kindness is present--they always give it back to you a thousand times over. Good Luck!

I am a happy with my choice of a Yorkshire terrier. My dog doesn't bark a lot, he is small, very devoted, although hard to potty train. They are the sweetest, most adorable, most devoted dog I have ever owned.
