Always use high altitude directions if you're in a high altitude area--get a high temp. thermometer for your oven to make sure your temperatures are accurate. Cook them in the middle of the oven, also--not a higher shelf or lower shelf.

Lessen the baking time by five minutes. My oven is hotter than others, so I have to check what I'm cooking before time is up. Also you can smell when the cookies are done. The scent in the air gets strong really quickly, and you may be able to smell a slightly burnt smell.
That's about it; just keep an eye on your cookies!

what I do is take them out of the oven just before they are done and I leave them on the cookie sheet for just a few minutes longer and I let the heat from the pan finish baking the cookie without overbaking them..

I've never had the same experience ever. Mine always turn out alright. Maybe it's your oven that's causing the problem. Switch to an oven where the heating is from the top rather than the bottom.

You could have added too much sugar. The black colour comes from burnt sugar.

It could be your cookie sheet, but I know that they always come out better if I take them out when the tops are just barely brown. They continue to cook until they cool to a certain point. Also don't leave them to cool on the pan. Take them off asap.

Buy an inexpensive oven thermometer. Sometimes oven temps will vary with the dial settings. This helped me stop burning cookies.

-Raise the oven rack to the top.
-For the last minute, put on broil - it gets the tops done without the bottoms getting burnt.
-Take cookies out sooner! - It's OK if they're soft and bend easily, when they cool, they harden.
Good Luck!
I hope your cookies turn out better next time!!!!!!

my mom keeps the cookies in for 13 minutes..that way they are yummy, gooey, and chewy when they come out..It gives the dough enough time to cook so its not raw but its less time so they are moist and yummy and gooey and freakin' delicious...

that might be your problem that you are keeping them in too long..try knocking like 2 - 5 minutes off the time you put them in for.

Good Luck!

Take them out when they're still mushy. Just let them sit cooling for awhile and they will get harder.
