most people if they get their first car when they are 16 either their parents buy it or the kid buys it with saved up money. my first car was a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS with the 305 V8. This was in May of 1999 at the end of my sophomore year of high school. So, the car was 7 years old and had right at 72,000 miles on it. It ran great and cost 4,200 dollars. Not a bad deal for the car and I had it for 2 years and I never turned a wrench on it.

It depends on your age. I was less than a month into my 18th bday when I bought my first car. Luckily I bought mine from someone my mom worked with so he let me make payments to him. I only paid a thousand for my car (a 96 Pontiac Bonneville). It ran perfectly for the first year I had it and it had more features than I knew what to do with (more than my new car does). The only problem with Pontiacs is everything tends to go wrong at the same time and I decided It wouldn't be worth it to invest $1500 into 10 year old car. So I traded it in two months ago for an 04 Chevy and got back every penny I spent on it. Basically, I profited on my car. My best advise is to ask around through family or friends to see if anyone you personally know is selling a car and buy it through them. You're much more likely to get a good deal on a good car.

Classified ads, and take it to a mechanic, if the seller objects, walk away. Average first car could go from about $800.00-$1,00.00, but it also depends on the car, and the price you would like to spend. Look around, price out a few, test drive more, and again take to a mechaninc for a good look over, that way you know what it needs, what won't pass, and if it is worth it.

I saved up $1,000 for a down payment and my dad was nice enough to put the balance of the car on his credit card and let me make payments until I got my own credit card to put it on. I was 17 when I got my first car, you have to be 18 to have your own credit card. Anyways, it was a 1997 Honda Civic LX Sedan for $6,900.....never had any problems with it besides having to replace the battery. The best car I'll probably ever have. Sadly, I totalled it in a very bad car accident last year and spent two weeks in ICU. I miss that car more and more everytime I see the same make/model/color.
