I know that an overdose on most medications do severe liver damage first and then, slowly and painfully, shut down everything else. Do sleeping pills do the same? It's just a question so I don't need anything other than good scientific answers.

what quantity / type of sleeping pills are you talking about....if your speaking of benzodiazepines (alprazolam, lorazepam, diazepam), their LD50 is relatively high, meaning a large amount ALONE shouldnt do a drastic amount of damage as compared to a high dosage of acetaminophen, which is notorious for liver damage.

im not 100 pecent but im almost positive yes the livers job is to clean chemicals that are not supposed to be in the body and this works by a process called hepatic metabolization and it is the part where the enzyme break down or eat away the substance thus cleaning the blood and naturally sleeping pills are not supposed to be in the body so your liver has to work harder to clean your blood and to much of any chemical is harmful and more toward worst case cause acute liver failure and you can also become dependent on the pills
