bought for us at the birth of our son (who is now three) the question is, should we preserve this for his 18th birthday or should we open it now?? Is it in essence his champagne or is it ours??

if it was bought for you then maybe you should drink it, or should already have done to celebrate his birth

you could carry on the tradition by buying him a bottle (or several) for his 18th....... would also make a good speech subject if he has a big family do for his 18th

"sorry son but we drank the champagne"

lol

either way make sure you enjoy the champagne whenever you drink it and enjoy your son growing up to reach his 18th

You should drink it now:
1) Because it was a gift meant for YOU, not the kid.
2) In 18 years you'll have a big bottle of really first class VINEGAR
because it doesn't keep very well.
3) You'll appreciate it more than he will.
4) Give him a wee taste of it this New Year's.

Maybe you could keep the empty bottle and your son can use it as a "piggy-bank". How many quarters do you think it'll hold?
Great start for a college fund...

The desicion to drink or hold a bottle of champagne should be based on the vintage year. If the vintage is of either 2002 or 2003, I highly reccomend holding the bottle for a while. As 2002 was considered by some to be of a higher quality vintage, this vintage will be best to let mature to it's peak. 2003 was considered to be a small harvest, and as such productions were low. 2001 should be avoided at all cost, due to a poor harvest leading in productions being of mostlt imported grapes. The vintages of 1999 and 2000 were considered to be average production years, and it would be your call to drink or hold. I hope this answer was helpful to you, or at least maybe teach you something you might not have known.

The champagne was a gift to you, so it's perfecty acceptable to consume it whenever you wish. While it's a lovely thought to preserve a bottle for his future birthday, non-vintage champagne has a relatively short shelf life (2-3 years), and likely would not be very tasty when the time rolls around.

Unless the giver specifically said it was a gift for your son, I think when alcohol is given to new parents it is meant for them. That being said, it would be pretty cool if when your son comes of age you could say to him, "Here is a bottle of champagne that was given to us on the day you were born. Now we will open it and celebrate the day you have become a man."

If you choose to hold onto it, make sure it is stored properly.

It is your to drink and enjoy! And if you do, don't even feel guilty. In three years from now, you'd have probably fogotten about the champagne.

BUT....

You have already had all the other bottles given to you. So maybe leave him this one. My parents got given a bottle of (now very expensive) red wine at my birth. They kept it , and was only given to me on my 21st. I had it recorked a few year ago and got to taste it. It is one om my cherished posessions, and I love that they kept it for me.

I bought my mom port for Mother's Day about 15 years ago and she still hasn't drunk it, so this Xmas, I'm going to drink it. Your son hasn't drunk his champagne yet, which seems a little ungrateful if you ask me, so I guess the same applies.

solution
drink it now, and when he turns 18 buy another bottle. After all, its just expensive beer. And you should be able to celebrate his birth more than once.

I say choose a good celebration and drink it. He may not like chapagne at 18, I didn't.
Take a photo of you celebrating and give that to him. I treasure photo's of my family at happy times and it is something he can keep for ever.

The answer's in your question "...bought for us..."
Whoever bought it gave it to you, not to your son. So, get it down on New Years's Eve at the latest, because it won't keep forever.
