In the Twentieth Century, the painting was x-rayed, and beneath the sand by her feet, were the painted words, "Only Goya."

The Duchess was widowed when she became Goya's mistress, but because of the great difference of their social classes, it had be kept secret. Also, her figure pointing downwards symbolized Goya's being "beneath her" since he was born to a tradesman and she was the upper nobility of Spain. The two castes would not be permitted to mix by the strict social hierarchy of the times.

This woman was a mistress of Goya's and when he painted the piece he had her writing in the ground (and I'm paraphrasing here) " I love Goya" That's it! No symbolism just an in your face to the woman's husband as well as her declaration of her love to the artist.
