Washing your hands helps yes. But everything you touch or handle from door knobs to your keyboard has dust and stuff on them. Combine that with the oils from your skin and the residual oils left by other people. And the fabric particles from clothes rugs etc. It all comes in contact with your hands and nails. Its just that on your hands it can spread and fall off. Whhere as your nails trap it. There is nothing you can do about keeping your nails short helps. But just keep cleaning away. Its just something we got to deal if you want longnails then u got to continually clean them. Good luck.

You may not truely be getting the dirt off of your body, try a luffa. Do you wear a lot of black or dark clothing? Next time you wear black clothing, notice how dirty your nails get?!

Well I went through the same problem and I just washed my hands, a lot. So maybe you should try washing them more, and use soap.
