The question shouldn't be how many of us approve of it. It should be: "Is premarital and extramarital sex right or wrong?" Finding the answer to this is not simply asking enough Americans what their opinion is on the matter, but rather seeking out the truth on it. God makes it very clear of what marriage should be, and so many people make a mockery of it. It is between one man and one woman, not one man and one woman and a few secret lovers. God also makes it very clear that premarital sex is also wrong.

Secretly approve of, or publicly approve of?

Because America has one serious disconnect between what they find acceptable to do and what they find acceptable to admit to in public.

The vast majority of Americans have sex before marriage. So, it follows that it is acceptable to most of them. Good luck getting most of them to admit it.

Extramarital sex is an entirely different ball of wax. Most people condemn it... if it is their partner involved. Some manage to conveniently forget this when they think they can get away with it.
