To go to a wedding? I got an invitation that's $50.00 a couple. I don't I will be going. Not because of the price But I think it's insane.
What do you think?

I don't think it's a good practice. I'm getting married soon and I know how expensive it is, but I think people should economise in another way, not by making the guests pay. Perhaps it is a cultural thing (though I have never heard of any culture that overtly does this - I have heard of "money dances" and buying a gift more expensive than what the family paid to have you at the wedding but never this). If you really like the couple, you could go and get them a very small gift if you get them anything at all. Or you could certainly not go - I wouldn't blame you a bit. Best of luck!

I think it has to be a cultural difference. It could be ethnic (you don't mention the couple's ethnicity), or it could be a regional difference within the USA.

I heard a story many years ago (probably a letter to Ann Landers) where a man said that he had attended the wedding and danced with the bride. At the end of their dance together, the bride said, "That will be $10." (I told you it was an OLD story.) Apparently that was a normal practice in her culture (or maybe just within her own family).
