I usually put the cork back in upside down because the part that was originally in the bottle is a little swollen. If that doesn't work for you, get a stopper from the liquor store to keep on hand for those half drunk bottles.

If you choose to use the original cork, it should go back in pretty easily but upside down, and about half way. If you are planning to keep the leftover wine for a couple of days, your best bet would be to also pick up a can of preservative gas which is designed for preserving wine. It's an inert gas which is heavier than oxygen. The gas is sprayed into the bottle to displace oxygen from inside the bottle. This will reduce oxidation and allow you to keep the leftover wine for a couple of days longer than with just the cork.

I had the same problem - so I bought an inexpensive wine stopper at the grocery store. That way you have it to cap off your wine and you don't have to mess with the crumbling cork.

it should just go back in, but if not cut the bottom of the cork on an angle. use a sharp knife so it doesn't break apart.
