Funny you should ask this as that happened to me and a lot of my internet friends by the same guy, actually we all became friends because of him and we all met him and each other at a game site. It's a long story and he loved us all and very believable but no one had a clue what he looked like, claimed he didn't like his picture taken, he would never call any of us. Well we started getting to know each other, by just walking in a room and talking and comparing notes and funny he was telling most of us the same thing. Two of us, I was one of them he really loved and sent us gifts with no name or return address. Well on one of the gifts he sent me it had a real name and address on it because he had ordered it through a company and the company sent it to me, anyway the town turned out to be 80 miles from me. Another long story about what happened but I did find out it was a 62 yr old lesbian dyke and not a good looking 42 yr old male. Her motive after I confronted her at her house was......."I was bored and started it as a joke to see if I could get by with it". She was very convincing trust me. Of course I spread the word which was hard for any of them to believe as it was for me.

So unless they actually talk to you on the phone or want to meet for real then don't believe a darn thing they tell you.

It would entirely depend. Have you messaged him at all before and this is after a year of conversation, or is he a random person you barely know/don't know at all? More importantly though the second part makes me think either way I'd be extremely cautious about believing him.

Sometime we miss out on lots thing for being skeptical, I'd not blame if you are but only you can actually get the real feeling of the truth about what he's saying. good luck!
