Can I just walk in to a sporting goods store and buy a rifle without a background check and/or waiting period? I need it to protect my properties.

Bound's hubby here:

Under current federal law, any sale made by a holder of a FFL (Federal Firearms License) must conduct a National Instant Check. Only private party sales are currently exempt from this check. However, whoever bought the firearm first is the registered owner start a paper trail when they sell a firearms because they never know what future owner will use it unlawfully.

Be forewarned... most stated do not allow property owners the right to use lethal force to protect property (your stated reason for buying a rifle). In most states, if you use lethal force to protect property you will find yourself facing charges for murder.

Have a nice day. Good luck.

The answer depends on your state laws. Most states allow you to go in with proper I.D. and purchase a long gun but federal law requires everyone to have a background check. Waitng periods vary state to state. As for protecting your property goes a rifle would seem awkward not to mention that after you fire at someone the law will be involved and they would more than likely see you wanting to kill a person by using a rifle and not protecting what is yours.

That depends somewhat on where you intend to purchase a rifle. Some states do not allow rifles to be sold to those who are not citizens of that state. In some cases it was because of the need for reliable background checks.
You might be able to go to a gun and knife show. You can buy from private individuals quite easily.
I suggest that you do lots of research regarding local laws as well as choice of weapons. You might be legal where you buy it and illegal where you live. Also, you might buy the wrong weapon for its intended purpose. Never swat a fly with a shotgun. It messes up your house. You also need to know lots about the weapon for your safety as well as other's safety.

Forget the mostly uninformed opinions above, federal guidlines state that you MUST undergo a background check, even at a gunshow. Your individual state may have a seperate mandate as to what you need in order to buy, usually 2 forms of ID are required, occasionally proof of citizenship is required, some states require a mandatory waiting period to purchase, some don't, your best bet would be to call a local gun shop and ask them exactly what you asked here.

I know most states have statues barring stores and businesses from selling rifles or handguns without a background check and I believe that it is also against federal guidelines as well.

Yes, no, maybe.
Yes, you can walk into a sporting goods store, or the sporting goods section in a department store - even Walmart.
No. You WILL have a background check done on you.
Maybe. Whether there is a waiting period or not depends upon your state and/or local laws.

You would be better served buying one from an individual, if you want to maintain reasonable anonymity. All my weapons have been purchased that way. But then, you need ammo. sigh....they will get you one way or another.
