I lived with my grandmother for a year during my teens and she used to be on a party line. I used to get so aggravated waiting for her neighbors to get off the phone so that I could use it! I would try to politely interrupt so they would wind up their chat and hang up, but these old ladies loved to gossip and seemed to be on the phone all hours of the day and night! No wonder my social life stunk until she got a private line!

Oh yeah, we had one of those big black phones. I never had a party line, but I remember having to be careful about what I spoke of when I called a couple of my friends.
I also remember playing star trek as a child and thinking "There will never really be voice activated stuff," little did I know.

My earliest memory of phones, was picking it up and hearing someone else's conversation. They were not in the house, but down the road.
All the phones in the house had the squiggly wires.
When I lived in the dorm, I was the first to have a cordless phone. It included a digital answering machine. The more messages I had, the more beeps the caller heard.
I was offended when I called a friend and they blocked anonymous calls.

Yes, I remember them well. Your number might be two long rings and two short rings and your neighbor would be vice versa. Everyone would listen to everyone else's conversations. I also remember if someone got mad at you they would call your number from a pay phone and lay the phone off the hook. Your phone wouldn't work until someone hung it up. I remember if that happened to anyone in our community they would drive around town checking the phone booths. Oh the good old days!!!!!!!!!!

I remember those and I remember the phones where you cranked the handle to get the operator who connected you to who you wanted to speak to.
