As a parent, what discipline approach would you take if this happened to you?

He is 15 years old, and by now, he should have already LEARNED the value of money -- so ... as it is now Christmastime -- I would SUGGEST that he be REQUIRED to use the cash he may get for the Holiday to REPAY you for the Camera HE LOST -- and that is NOT negotiable.

Why discipline him? He is not hiding it from you. Look for it together as team work. This will be a lesson for him in tolerance and work to help each other which is a much better lesson than punishment. Punishment teaches nothing. and don't sweat the small stuff.
It will be found at the last place you look.

You shouldn't get overly upset with him because it was an accident and we all lose things. I do think he should do extra work around the house to "earn" the money to buy another one. This teaches him that although it is okay to make mistakes we still have consequences.

Calm sister. You should control your mood and feelings. And too scary if you took that to your son. I mean you're so angry to him then you hurt him for example. And don't forget to discipline him by a smooth conversation.

He more than likely sold it. And if he didnt he should be made to get a job on weekends or after school (bagging groceries or flipping burgers wont kill him for a while) and replace it. They have to learn responsibility for their actions good and bad. That would be my advice.

I would make him work to pay for it. Jobs for neighbors, relatives... If it is probably lost forever.
If not I would just look around the house until its found (with his help) and then not let him use it.
