The negative cathode ray creates magnetism within the vacuum tube. The polar-effect occurs, hence the name.

P.S. I have a Chemistry test on electrical currents, etc... on Monday. I'm a junior in high school. Isn't it amazing what teens are expected to know these days. My school is so difficult; I even go to a public school.
