Firstly, it's not just an Australian expression...it's worldwide.

Clear as mud means simply means you didn't understand even after it was explained. Someone will explain or describe something but it still does not make sense. Using the phrase "clear as mud" is kind of a sarcasm as mud is not clear and neither was what they just said.

It's sarcasm. It's saying it's not clear at all. Usually used to describe an explanation; for example, I ask you a question and you give me a very wordy, confusing answer. When you ask if I understand, I'd say, "sure, it's as clear as mud!"

This is a phrase created in the 1500's. It was reported that this has really no start at all! Two common things Clarity and Confusion or "mud" as stated back then created an oximoron. When these words were put together they created a lasting impact that said to the person how truly unclear there perception was to the action that was just created.

Means you dont understand what just occured.
Simple English derived from Anglo-Saxon vocabulary

Imagine a field of grain standing tall and straight in the sun. Now imagine that someone drives a tractor through it. Some of the grain is going to be crushed into the ground in an irregular pattern. Given time, water, and sun, the grain will straighten itself. Now imagine that the field of grain is a metaphor for your life. Everything is going along well, and suddenly some catastrophic (or minor) event throws everything into chaos. These events have a way or sorting themselves out as time passes. Clear as mud? lol

Clear as mud means that the idea isn't clear at all...pure water is pure and can be "seen" through. Mud, however, isn't pure and can not be "seen" through.

When someone says, "clear as mud." it means they don't understand what you are talking about.
