Whats the best way to keep them separated until the heat cycle is over. I bought a female dog diaper bit it seems like I am always having to wash it and it dosent seem fair to keep him locked up all the time while its drying. They are all inside dogs and I do crate him while I am away from home but while I am home he wants to be out as well. Any suggestions to make this a workable situation?

For one thing, DO NOT think a diaper will stop them from breeding, they are only to keep her from bledding all over!

You will have to keep one or the other crated ALL the time, it can only take a brief few seconds and they are breeding. Keep one in a room where the other cannot access, they can breed through a wire crate or crate door.

It is only for 3-4 weeks, they will be fine taking turns being crated, people have to do it all the time. Of course they want to be out, but you have to be responsible and keep them seperated, or else just get one or the other fixed.

Keep them in seperate rooms. Even seperate floors if you have more than one story. Or take turns crating them. Let the male out while the female is crated and vice versa. Just make sure everyone in the house knows when they can and cannot be left together. Wait until females are 18 mo to 2 yrs before breeding them. Then only once a yr.

Please spay and neuter...there is an epidemic of pet over population and cats, dogs, puppies and kittens (yes, puppies and kittens) are gassed, drowned, shot, starved, tortured every day. Not all shelters euthanize (kill) the animals humanely.

Do a search on http://www.petfinder.com for your breed in your area. That's just a small sampling of all the homeless ones all over the nation.

If you don't want to be responsible and want to add to more deaths, than keep them crated until they are mature when they are in heat.

Sigh...I'm getting so sad seeing how many people are after a quick buck with no regard to the welfare and future of the thousands of puppies they will inevitabely produce....

Sounds like you are doing the best thing all ready. If you don't want babies then you have to keep them seperate. I know it does't seem fair but it's the only way. Do you alternate letting him out and putting her in the crate for a while. You could try wire pens but I'm afraid that he would jump the wire. You could also use a childs gate and shut him in a whole room.

Not to sound rude, but it seems that you and every other Chihuahua owner, wants to breed their dogs. Why?
There are so many dogs in shelters right now, INCLUDING Chihuahuas. Why take away their chance at a forever home, by breeding and adding more dogs to the already overpopulated world?
There are more dogs, than there are responsible owners.

Spay/Neuter. Problem solved. The world does NOT need more puppies.

Keep your dogs crated all the time until you can have them fixed.

Why is every other poster on this board looking to add to the overcrowded pet population?

Keeping him crated is the best thing. That's how it is when you have bitches in heat. Having him neutered or them spayed is the best idea unless you are planning on showing.

I don't recommend using any type of wire cages or gates that have nice big holes in them. If the female is willing, she can just back her butt right up to it and he can do his thing.
