I have such ugly teeth that I never smile. When I had my first child, my teeth began to rot, and after my second child they became worse, I know I need work but am afraid of going to a dentist. Any suggestions on how i can feel more comfortable going, and any good dentists in northern Ontario, Plus I have no benefits, ao all will have to paid for out of pocket

I was in your shoes a couple of years ago. I finally made the decision to tough it out and go anyway. The skill of the dentist and the improved methods of anesthesia are so great that I had only the initial prick of the prenumbing and no pain thereafter. I told the dentist (and it is true) that the typical amount of anesthesia was not sufficient for me and he used about 4 times the amount normally used. One of the procedures I had that first day was a root canal. In the past it was so painful and for days. This time - no pain and no after pain. The dentist gave me pain meds for after but I didn't need them.

As to benefits. You may have a dental school affiliated with one of the colleges of medicine in Ontario. It would be worth it as they are usually free. Also, I bought dental insurance for 35.00 per month and got my dental surgery done for practically nothing except for my dental insurance premium and co-pay.

Talk to the dentist first. He or she will reassure you and make you feel at ease. Believe me, there is a lot to smile about in the world. Don't hide behind your hand any longer. I do understand. I'm rooting for you, dear friend.

Perhaps you can find an organization that will help pay for it, there's several in the US that work for children and stuff but I'm sure if you would not be able to afford it there's a program to help you out, so ask around. I hate the dentist as well but the best bet is to just bring a friend to talk to and keep you calm (going alone makes you focus more on the events than reality) and many dentists will allow you to bring a friend into the exam room with you if you are really nervous, you just have to ask the dental hygienist because it is according to their preference. Good luck!
